UNCUT 134min EDITION! Brand New & Factory Sealed in a SLIM case. Region 2 PAL (UK & Europe). IMPORTANT: This is the official Czech release. The front cover is exactly as pictured and the back cover has Czech text. The film itself has optional Czech sound & subtitles on/off. ORIGINAL ENGLISH SOUNDTRACK - GUARANTEED > > > > > Jessica Lange gives the performance of a lifetime as iconoclastic actress Frances Farmer, whose rejection of the star system led to her being continually declared insane by her fame-hungry mother Lillian (Kim Stanley) for nothing more than her open defiance. Lange's command of the role makes you feel like there's a knife in your stomach, it's that intense. Both Lange and Stanley garnered Oscar Nominations for their tour-de-force portrayals. Director Graeme Clifford tells this shocking, true tale with the utmost assuredness, never hitting the audience overly hard (in fact, perhaps not hard enough) nor attempting to sway their opinion. The screenplay from Eric Bergren, Nicholas Kazan and Christopher De Vore is even throughout, and the score by John Barry is melodic and deeply moving. "Frances" isn't the sort of movie that you can just watch - it draws you in, and discomfits you by showing how a free, artistic spirit can be totally crushed by tragic, though changeable, circumstances. An original story like this carries enough weight on its own to impart much dramatic power. Coupled with Jessica Lange's triumphant performance, this is doubly so...

Fantastic movie 23 Oct 2002
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
This movie has made an everlasting impression on many, who have watched it, including myself.
The Hollywood-industry can make good movies in addition to all its stereotyping entertainment, this movie proofs.
Frances is about the life of the American movie actress; Frances Farmer and her encounter with psychiatry, starring Jessica Lange in perhaps her best role to date.
It is said, that Hollywood ashamed of its part in the fate of Frances Farmer left the direction to some relatively unknown filmmakers, hoping the movie wouldn't catch the attention of the film audience. I dont know, if it's true, but in case it is, it wasn't succesful.
This movie can be compared to "One flew over the cuckoo's nest".
Of course the directors uses their share of poetic license in their account of the story of Frances Farmer, but they don't obscure the message as done in "A Beautiful Mind".

Format:VHS Tape
Based on Frances Farmer's enthralling autobiography, "Will There Really Be A Morning", this film explores the life of a Hollywood starlet who chose to go against Hollywood stereotyping, refusing to dumb herself down for the movie machine while struggling to maintain her integrity as an actress. In a town governed by men, sex and money this wasn't such a great career move and few people will know her for her acting. She is probably most famously immortalised in the Nirvana song, "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle".

This film holds nothing back in terms of Farmer's struggles with her mother, the law and later with mental health authorities, and in this respect is controversial as some dispute the veracity of her story, but it is her story and most definitely is true to her book. Jessica Lange is a dead ringer and gives an outstanding performance as the intelligent and misunderstood young actress. The film is carried along solely on her shoulders with great ease and style.

A fascinating and harrowing look into Hollywood's production line and what was considered sane and insane in the US in the 1940s.

Raw, real, and tragic 28 July 2008
Format:DVD
Jessica Lange puts in a star turn as tragic starlet Frances Farmer in this touching feature. Frances Farmer, queen of the alkies and dreamers, was way ahead of her time as not surprisingly was detained in a madhouse at the word of mum. lange is clearly familiar with Farmer's material and style, and the harrowing scenes of Farmer's incarceration make this film, real, sad, and inspirational.
