A volume of memories 25 Feb 2006
Format:Hardcover
This is an unexpected pleasure. I picked up a copy of this book as a present for a friend. When I opened it, I decided to keep it for myself. I bought it for the pictures, which are brilliant and evoke so many memories of travelling in France. However, the words are what make this more than just another coffee table book. The author is obviously very much in love with France, and with its people. He includes descriptions of journeys through the regions of France, the simple pleasures of sitting at a cafe table and watching the world go by and buying, tasting and drooling over food. This paints even more vivid pictures in my memory of many wonderful holidays on my own and with my family. On this Amazon site I read that the author Lawrence Phillips has written other books on France and have now ordered his book on Lille ready for my next Channel hopping. Meanwhile, I can dip into the beautiful pages of this personal Tour de France. A delicious indulgent treat for Francophiles like me.

I discovered this book after being won over by the author's delightfully informal and informative Bradt Guides to Lille and to Paris. As I had expected, Laurence Phillips' description of France and of the French is as evocative and affectionate as ever. He really is a complete francophile and his books convey this love of the country and the lifestyle. Unlike his guidebooks, this volume is lavishly ilustrated with great pictures of the sights and the diversity of the country. This is probably Phillips' love letter to France. A pity that a book this expensive does not include the author's usual tips and winks about the best places to eat and to visit and his customary suggestions of places to stay. My only quibbles are that this is really a coffee table book, too bulky for travelling and missing the essential information I look for when making the most of a trip to France. As a loyal reader of Laurence Phillips on France, I miss the foodie aspects of his Bradt Guides.
