I own the original Telefunken disc of this recording and I'm so pleased Alia Vox have finally reissued it on CD. The sound is glorious and much better than the old LP. I also have the Pierlot and Bernfeld versions of these works - both are very good in their different ways (please see my reviews) - but returning to the Savall version there is even greater subtlety and richness which the remastered sound brings out. These are profound works, certainly the greatest French music written for the bass viol, of greater significance than the works of Marais, Forqueray and Sainte Columbe. Only Bach's three gamba sonatas can compare. This is the version I most highly recommend.
