Review

Search Press' practical books contain many examples of pictures to make that you can hang on your walls. You can take these to a professional framer of course, but in the true Search Press spirit of doing it yourself, why not make your own frames? This is a hobby in its own right, and you might well find yourself deluged with requests from other "crafty" friends to make frames for their own masterpieces. Perhaps this might not be a bad idea, as flipping to the section on what you need if you don't already own tools such as a mitre saw, underpinner ad mount cutter you will first need to purchase them. Once you have, you can read all about how to do it, including cutting mountboard and all the technical woodworking stages such as setting up your saw, assembling and more. Of course, this is the bare bones of framing as surely apart from doing a good job, the aesthetics of the process is just as important. I particularly liked the section showing how one picture looked when framed by different colors of board and different styles of frame. Then you need to know about hanging pictures, and displaying them to their greatest advantage. The rest of the book is given over to the advanced stuff; the different styles of frame, oval and round mounts, coloring frames and a whole lot else. If you are reasonably confident (and competent) at woodwork and want to try something a bit different then this is a good book on how to do it that covers just about everything I could think of concerning frames and framing. -Myshelf.com This book helps make the best of artwork. Aimed at all abilities, it will help you achieve professional results, no matter what you are framing. Includes information on framing, displaying and mounting as well as stretching canvas. Packed with information, illustrations, tips and hands-on knowledge, this is a useful book.-KarenPlatt.co.uk

Frames & Framing 4 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
As a complete newcomer to picture framing this book was superb giving a step by step introduction as to how to work with frames etc. It certainly answered all of my questions in a simple and easy to read fashion. I have managed to create a number of frames since getting the book. I would recommend this to anyone who to find out how to create frames.

A Useful Introduction 25 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Good points: well illustrated, clear, written for UK readers so product/store references are relevant, some good tips.

Whinges and gripes: like an awful lot of framing books, it's aimed at mounting small scale works on paper so most of it is about mountboards, glass etc. I'm interested in making frames for my own larger canvas paintings and there is not much about that, especially floating frames for deep canvases (where there's a gap round the canvas) which are almost universal for 'modern' paintings in art expos but very hard to source, even at professional framers. (I end up making the mouldings myself with two battens from a timber store, it's a lot cheaper and you can use nice wood).

But overall, the book is still a useful reference and I'm glad I bought it.
