5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for Mage: the Ascension, 19 Dec 2000
If you're expecting new rotes, systems or rules, you'll be sorely disappointed. This is a sourcebook, detailing the trials of the First Cabal that was formed after the Convocation to fight the Technocracy and spread the word among the Sleepers in the 15th century. Ultimately they were Bertayed by their leader, but it was not the failure it might have seemed.

It's written from the viewpoint of Master Porthos, who knew each of the nine members to a degree or another. It's a story of their lives, loves and sacrifices. It's quite moving in it's own way, and includes testimonies of those who survived.

I give it five stars for anyone who is interested in where the Tradition Council came from, and the history of the First Cabal. Seeing things from their perspective many gains have been made, even if the Technocracy seems to dominate the modern paradigm.

If you want a rulebook with some useful things you can use directly, you'll have to look elsewhere. If you want an enlightening read into some of the background of the game, and into the Revised metaplot, this is for you.
