Fragile sounding better than ever, 20 Aug 2004
This review is from: Fragile [DVD AUDIO] (DVD Audio)
I won't comment on the album - if you're a Yes fan all you need to know is "should I buy this". The answer is "Yes you should". The next question is "How soon can I have more of these please". I would REALLY love to have 90125 and the Yes Album in this format. I have two Queen audio DVDs and this Yes album. I have a good quality surround setup and as far as I'm concerned this is the most fun music listen I've heard in years. And the sound is just super crisp - this Yes album in particular is REALLY nicely done. Some nice artwork and features on the disc as well. I prefer the DTS surround version - the Dolby surround version is somehow more subtle but less lively. Plus you get 96Khz high resolution versions as well. Great value!

Classic album given new life!, 8 Aug 2003
This review is from: Fragile [DVD AUDIO] (DVD Audio)
It's great when something or someone you've known for so long (in this case around 25 years) can still surprise you. Well hearing Fragile on the DVD-A format did just that, bringing a new depth and clarity to an already excellent recording.
The degree of presence provided by the higher resolution format brings the band into the room. The group pieces work best, with the title track and 'South Side of the Sky' serving as a showcase for the band's virtuosity and atmospheric vocal harmonies.
A must buy for any Yes fan. Can't wait for more Yes releases on the format.

Dvd audio review of fragile., 29 Jan 2003
This review is from: Fragile [DVD AUDIO] (DVD Audio)
Firstly This was the first Dvd audio title I've bought so the listening experence was new to me, the equipment which I played the album through was a set of good quailty digital speakers and the only computer sound card on the market namely the Audigy 2, with the Dvd audio player.
The sound quailty is quite amazing, at times it really is like having the band around your house the sound is as crisp and sharp and without doubt is much better than cd.,
As for the album itself there are times where the sound mix works and other tracks where it falls flat.
Starting with roundabout this sounds fresh and exiting in this format, the bass playing of mr Chris Squire is brought to you full in the face, the guitar sound is clear, the drum sound solid and the vocals of Jon Anderson soar and swirll all around you, meanwhile Rick Wakeman can be heared playing away more clearly then ever before.
Moving on to the tracks that don't work Cans and Brahms The fish and Five per cent of nothing , the sound is sent around each individual speakers during thesesongs and it just sounds awfull it has a bad gimick feel to it, We have Heaven and Mood for a day sound fine.
South side of the sky and long distance runaround are great songs and once more sound suberb in this format, but the standout track has to be Heart of the Sunrise the contrast between the band playing at breakneck speed and the peacfull moments is greatly exposed with Dvd Audio, When Chris squire is playing bass in the number it sounds as if he is right next to you with his practice amp.
Each instrument can be heared clearly it does sound like a new album from Yes even though Fragile is over 30 years old.
