Love it! 23 April 2012

My last case was the original Antec Sonata (an old but great case at the time) but this case excited me even more than the Sonara when I unboxed it and saw the interior.

I choose this case over the Define R3 as I preferred the looks and slightly smaller size. It was delivered to my workplace and was admired internally and externally by quite a few workmates. I think it has a cool yet mature style compared to the awful "I'm a spaceship" cases out there ;-)

At home I had a great time building with this case!

The thumbscrews are very stiff when first opened. But they supply an Alan key with a Phillips head on one end to assist with that, so no problem. You need to be brave when pulling the case panels for the first time.

Cable management was a breeze with plenty of good sized and well placed holes allowing you to route behind the motherboard tray. I would have liked more hoops for cable ties, but to be honest that's just me being far too picky.

An unexpected bonus was discovering that the 3.5" floppy bay has a removable tray that you can mount a 2.5" SSD onto it and leave the removable 3.5" hard drive caddies for hard drives.

The 140mm case fans shift a lot of air at higher revs, but emit a high pitched squeal if you try to rev them too low using the supplied fan controller (supports three 3-pin fans). As I'm interested in having a very quiet PC I've order replacement fans. I'm not taking any stars off this review as even at mid revs the fans were still reasonably quiet.

The USB3 port on the front panel expects your motherboard to have a 19 pin USB3 header, so if you want that to be operational do check your motherboard manual. If like me your motherboard doesn't have this you can buy an IO card (e.g. Delock and Silverstone) but I'm going to wait until the price drops on those.

Very large 'midi' case, especially the width, which will eat even the largest cooler (e.g. Dark Rock Advanced for instance). Plenty of room to work, and more fan cooling than you would even need (3 fans fitted, space for too many more). The fan controller is not very impressive, since wiring the fans to it neatly is a challenge (it fits in a backplate slot, rather than front or top of the case). Lots of opportunity to hide other wiring behind the motherboard, especially if you are not fitting water cooling.

Apart from that, no complaints .. pretty quiet, good airflow, and well built. I was previously a Lian-li case fan, but this is (IMO) as good and cheaper.

I personally hate front doors on computers, but if you prefer 'even quieter, with a door' (and worse airflow, and a PITA when using the CD drives) then the fractal R3 looks equally good.

Excellent case! 9 May 2012

ive been looking for a new case for the best part of a year and ended up narrowing it down to core 3000,arc midi, corsair 400r but desided on this one as it has good quality fan filters in the bottom and front of the case, cable management rubber grommets, plenty of room behind the motherboard tray for cables ect,ive removed the top hdd cage and now my gpu runs 10c cooler! my overall system temps have dropped a great deal. i took the fan from the top and placed it in the front so ive got 2 fans for intake, also ordered another 140mm fan for the bottom as another intake so temps will probably drop again. the fans are virtually silent which is good. the case is also very wide so will support even the biggest cpu coolers and of corse it will take a 240mm rad in the roof :) id recommend this case to anyone wanting a very tidy and cool system,it comes with loads of accsessories inc a fan controller for in the vertical expansion slot on the back.

buy one :)
