5.0 out of 5 stars Have We Been Foyled for the Last Time??? 9 July 2007
Upon watching the last thrilling episode, in which Foyle confronts the insurmountable stumbling blocks of wartime necessity headlong by tendering his resignation----After all, the Ruhr dams must be busted!----I had to go online to make sure that a new season was coming up. I have become addicted to this low-key but absorbing, instructive, and endlessly entertaining mystery series. And there are still about three years of World War II to go.

As this series continues, the lead characters, Chief Inspector Foyle (Michael Kitchen) and Samantha (Honeysuckle Weeks), become ever more engaging. The settings of Hastings and the Sussex countryside become ever more picturesque. Moreover, as the mysteries become ever more intriguing, the narrative of Britain during the Blitz----the people's hardships, their gallantry, and in many cases their victimization by unscrupulous profiteers----becomes indelibly compelling. The series would make an excellent teaching tool in a history class, since it not only presents a fascinating account of the war but it also gives a realistic depiction of the toll that war takes on the civilian population. This splendid BBC series puts a human face both on casualties and survivors, whom the modern media tend to dismiss with the callous and meaningless catchphrase, "collateral damage."

Whew! I can now rest easy. There will indeed be another season of "Foyle's War" in 2008.

5.0 out of 5 stars Foyle's War, Series 4 2 Aug 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase

Be warned - for some reason quite difficult to explain, "Foyle's" (like "Spooks") is addictive. Watch it on television and buy one series to catch up on one you missed - often cheaper than one evening at the cinema - and you will buy another and another then find yourself sitting at home in the darkness watching them with friends, wives/husbands, sharing them with other members of the family and generally having hours of harmless fun. If you know Hastings, you might find yourself spotting places or discussing the plots with family and friends.

Anthony Horowitz is a great writer and script-writer who successfully combines the intricate plots with period action and a war-time experience but from the point of view of the civilians at home; often, the war is the unseen backdrop against which the stories unfold. Visually inventive and attractive, set with great attention to details in the forties, it depicts Spartan civilian life very effectively. The storylines show the effects of war on families at home and the underground racketeering which often accompanied acts of heroism in others. The actors are very convincing, ideal for the time period and seem to have a great chemistry on set, even if one does have to make allowances for Sergeant Milner's rapid and miraculous recovery from losing part of a limb.

Like life, some episodes are better than others, but they're well worth living through just for the fun of it. Recommended but, be warned. You will want the next one and need another book/CDshelf soon.

There are many other detailed reviews and sites so I will not repeat the information here. I will just recommend this and the other DVDs in the series. To save your money, consider buying the fuller sets initially or you will eventually buy the individual ones then wish you had thought about it!

Foyle's War gives a valuable insight into civilian life and duties during WW2. The drama and performance by all the cast is brilliant. Drama is one thing that the UK does best. Every 90 minute episope of Foyle's War has been carefully thought out in detail. Watching Foyle's War may not be living it..but you come very close. If there were ten stars and not five in the rating, that would be my choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Foyle's war - series 4 24 Nov 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I ordered this as a gift for a family member - and because I had watched the series on television previously.

There are many detective series broadcast but Foyle's war is far more credible than most. Intelligently written, with superb characterisation Foyle's war is in a class of its own. I regard Foyle's war as probably the best series broadcast on television in recent times - it really is quality viewing and I can't praise it enough.

So thank you Anthony Horowitz and the cast and crew of this excellent drama for providing us with such a delight of entertainment.
