This is the second sequel to the minor classic "The Animals of Farthing Wood". It has attractive chapter header illustrations and the usual Dann quota of 160-180 pages. Forget the animated series which included this story. Although there were some excellent episodes in the 3 series generated by the Farthing Wood books, the series was ruined on screen due to the introduction of blue foxes so that the native British red foxes would have a clearly definable enemy.
In this book as there are no colour pictures there is no need to invent a new species to help the reader. Fox and Vixen have settled in White Deer Park and have 4 cubs - Bold, Dreamer, Friendly and Dreamer. However, the leader of the indigenous White Deer foxes, Scarface, believes that there is not sufficient food in the nature reserve - particularly after the recent harsh winter which was covered in the previous sequel, "In the Grip of Winter".
When Scarface kills one of Fox and Vixen's cubs, it marks the beginning of a terrible battle between the two groups of vulpine mammals.

Fox's Feud 2 April 2008
Format:Paperback
The third "Farthing Wood" novel brings a more familiar tale to the unwilling leader of the Farthing Wood animals: grief and vengeance. The start of the feud between the foxes of the park is actually quite shocking, even for what is essentially a children's book. The ensuing rivalry, and the blossoming relationship between the feuding families' youngest generations, has echoes of Romeo and Juliet and similar stories, meaning that this book rates a touch lower than some of the others in the series.

It remains however an engaging read - but again if you didn't like the first book, or weren't enthralled by these or the animated series as a youth, you may find the story lacking compared to novels written purposefully for adults. This book really deserves over three stars, but felt a plain four would be giving a good book a touch too much credit.

Fox's Fued is a really great book. It is written so well and the vocabulary is excellent. Colin Dann is one of the best writers..ever. Fox's Fued is explained so well and at points it keeps you in suspence. The characters and the story are both perfect.
