Product Description

In this sequel to Shadow Fox, after waiting his whole life to return home and learn who he really is, Jared quickly discovers his world is much more complicated than he ever imagined. As the newly appointed Captain, he is now responsible for raising an army to take on an enemy he knows next to nothing about, while his own king anticipates his failure. With his love life is in near shambles, he must now win Tarika back in spite of a romance blossoming between her and his closest friend, Nathaniel.

Just as things begin to improve with the victory of their first small battle, Jared’s childhood sexual abuse is brought glaringly to light, leading to obsession and dysfunction. As if the disease in his blood were not bad enough, he will soon jeopardize everything he holds dear to feed this demon of the mind, even going so far as to fall victim to a dangerous affair with an enemy princess.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great follow up to Shadow Fox 6 April 2011
By Darkiss
Format:Kindle Edition
This book carries on directly from were Shadow Fox left off. Jared, now known as Captain Dunefaellan and Lady Tarika have returned to the world of their birth. Jared must now raise an army and make war to reclaim lost lands for a king he hates and a world he doesn't know.

Jared has always been a troubled hero, often being his own worst enemy. In Fox Rising he continues his decent into darkness with his own self destructive behaviour, all the while battling to keep the love of Tarika. Throughout Shadow Fox, Jared was a troubled character but still someone you could feel for, but by the end of Fox Rising I found my feelings towards him suffered a complete polar shift. I could no longer feel for him and all my sympathy rested with Tarika. Like the first book this is very well written and you find yourself lost within the story and the moral struggles of the characters.

New characters fill this story, some who we get to know in great depth while others are only fleeting glimpse, all adding to the texture of the world. The book explores a number of controversial subjects which some people may struggle with, but this all adds to the gritty feel of the story.Ashley pulls no punches here. Like the real world bad things happen to good people and she deals with this wonderfully.

I took less than 24 hours to read this book and the only reason I didn't finish the book in one sitting is because I lost my battle with sleep. The story carried me forward at breakneck speed and I found myself fully immersed within the story.

Fox Rising is a worthy continuation to Shadow Fox. My one complaint about it is one it shares with any book I like and that is "It is too short". I was gutted when I came to the last page.

I now wait in anticipation for Night of the Fox the final part to the series. I am a definite fan of Ashley Barnard's writing and look forward to all her future projects. If you have not started the Shadow Fox series then it is really is something you need to do.

Few authors have captured my reading soul so completely. She is a future Queen of Fantasy/Paranormal Romance.
5.0 out of 5 stars Sieges of castles and of hearts 9 Mar 2012
By Aaron - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
This book continues the story begun in Shadowfox. This book avoids the classic pitfall of the trilogy: sometimes the second book is weak or the plot is thin. Not so here. It might even be the strongest book in the series. This volume switches to the fantastical world revealed ever so slightly in Shadowfox, but because the characters come from our world and view everything with their sensibilities, it's like reading Urban Fantasy and High Fantasy at the same time. And even now, though the swords and the magic are very much in evidence, much of what goes on hinges on character's pasts and hidden secrets.

In the middle of the book is a siege between two opposing towers. The book really takes off here, combining the stakes of the warfare all around to the profound discoveries that people are making about themselves and each other. And what's this? Someone new named Nathaniel? Is he going to help Jared and Tarika's relationship or threaten it? Whatever you're thinking, be prepared to be surprised.

This book is full of everything you'd want in a fantasy story: Curses, swords, magic, but also adds real people doing real things (like experiencing betrayal, coming to grips with their pasts, and having awesome sex)that make it more than your typical fantasy novel. It also makes you want to pick up Night of the Fox, the last book in the trilogy, as soon as possible.
5.0 out of 5 stars Romance! Love Triangles! Deception! War! 23 Aug 2011
By Lenore - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The sequel to Shadow Fox is a definite page-turner just like its predecessor. All of my favorite characters are back and new faves are added too. The romance, love triangles and deceit are all expertly woven together and are thrilling to read. I found myself rooting for some unsavory characters too which surprised me. I am hooked and now need the last installment of this series, Night of the Fox.

5.0 out of 5 stars An infuriating can't stop read 9 April 2011
By Jude Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Whoa. Fox Rising grabs you by the throat and shakes you till you're limp.

In this sequel to the excellent Shadow Fox, Jared Dunefallen, Tarika Drayton, and the steadfast Nathaniel prepare for war while sorting out their complicated, messy, and wrenching relationship. It is no small achievement that Ms. Barnard makes battlefield combat more civil than the clashes between her leads. Jared is one terribly tortured soul, and life doesn't get any easier in the alternate universe he and Tarika call home. He is a man bedeviled and doomed in more ways than one, and his slide into self destruction is as painful as Tarika's strength is admirable, as Nathaniel's chivalry is endearing. The secondary characters, such as the sweet Phillip, mysterious Marishka, or vile Necar, are every bit as engaging.

This is not a light or fluffy read; I found my heart racing and my jaw clenching with anxiety for the characters, gripping me so tightly I actually had to - HAD TO - finish it the same day I started it. This epic tale reminded me often of The Mists of Avalon, with a tangled triangle whose resolution will decide the fate of their world.

I highly recommend Fox Rising, but warn you: these characters will get under your skin, piss you off, break your heart, and make you anxiously impatient to see how the saga ends. The countdown has started for the next installment...
