I watched this the first time around in 1980 and was enthralled by the tightly-scripted storyline, strong characterisation and superb acting from the main cast members. Fox has coppers and villains, but is not really about either-the main thread is the concept of The Family, and how they interact with outsiders and each other. "The family-not a very fashionable concept these days" says Phil Fox, the intellectual of the clan. Unfashionable maybe, but I guarantee that this series will grip you from the start and you will have to force yourself to go to bed and not watch one more episode. 23 years' wait for a video/DVD release was too long! Try to catch this one, you will not be disappointed as Fox makes many more recent dramas appear over-produced and poorly acted. A genuine classic of British television, with great actors such as Peter Vaughan, Derrick O'Connor and the wonderful Rosemary Martin.
