More About the Author

Phil Roxbee Cox would love to win his height in books because he's very tall and loves reading. He's one of those people with an interest in anything and everything, and likes nothing more than finding out stuff. He's been writing Usborne books since the early 1990s and is delighted to be paid to do something he'd probably do for nothing if he didn't need to eat and have somewhere to live. He spends much of his free time visiting mossy old buildings and loves playing around with words, too. "Writing the Easy Words To Read and the Cautionary Tales series has been such fun," he says. "Getting the words to work with the pictures to create the maximum effect is a very rewarding. It's a real collaboration between author, editor, designer and illustrator." Philip's work includes both fiction and non-fiction for a variety of ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Foxy! 15 May 2011
Another winner in the Usborne Phonics collection featuring animals and their crazy ideas. Fox joins the ranks alongside Hen (Hen's Pens), Toad (Toad Makes a Road) and Pig (Big Pig on a Dig), plus many others.
The book is colourful, the story lively, and the illustrations utterly charming.

5.0 out of 5 stars A phonics reader, with fold out flap facility 8 Feb 2008
about a fox who has a somewhat hazardous life!

From Usborne Publishing, this super book is part of a series, currently of 12 titles.
This delightful educational series is further enhanced by the little yellow duck 'hiding' on each page - young children love to find him on every turn!
Also, the books have a 'familiar feel', often with the presence of characters from the other titles in the series, further aiding recognition skills and confidence building.

16 high quality shiny pages, in the popular 2-page spread format with superb, endearing illustrations throughout, and 4 sturdy behind the flap opportunities. Numbered pages.

Simple text with plenty of repetition of words, e.g.:-

'Hungry Fox spots a box.
Hungry Fox hops onto the box.
He tries to reach....
(and hidden behind the fold out page is the answer!)

Hungry Fox pushes the box.
'Now I'm as tall as the wall!' calls Fox.

Hungry Fox pushes the box.......'

The inside cover page describes 'About Phonics' in relation to this specific title and the inside back cover has the list of words used in the text, broken down into their phonemes.

From the back cover:-

'Created in consultation with a language expert, this book is part of an engaging phonics-based series, especially written to help your child learn to read.
Not only is the story great fun, it also takes into account recent research on the most effective ways of teaching reading.
Stephen Cartwright's delightful illustrations complement the text and are designed to stimulate further interest. Fold out pages add to the enjoyment.'

5.0 out of 5 stars Fox on a box by Phil Roxbee Cox 9 Mar 2010
Don't buy the book, buy the box. It rocks.

(What I mean is - don't buy this individual book, buy the box set. My son, at 18 months, will happily sit through several of these at a time. The artwork is something special, too.)
