Product Description

Synopsis

Unlike Victorian children, stories broadcast on Radio Four are meant to be heard as well as seen but a good story is always a good story and this collection is as easy on the page as it was on air. The mood moves fluently from tragic to feisty and the period from early in the last century to the beginning of this one. A recurring theme is World War Two and its effect on the children of the '40s, one of whom, Ulrich Neiman, is a German Jewish refugee. Locations are as varied as subject matter, ranging from sweltering opal country in our-back Australia for 'Solitaire', to the azure coast of southern Turkey - for 'Sea Change', through cloudy South West England to the chill Scottish highlands which is the setting for the final story - 'The Swimming Lesson'.

Perfect for reading while travelling. Each story takes about 15 minutes to read. They are tremendously varied and obviously some are more enjoyable than others (I particularly liked Frangipani Experience and Object of Desire). But all of them leave you feeling satisfied, in a way that many short stories don't these days. Highly recommended.
