8 of 8 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars Simple explanations of complex ideas - excellent., 11 July 2007 By T. Manwaring "beyond driving" (Lancashire) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME) This review is from: Four-by-four Driving: Off-roader Driving (Hardcover) This is such a simple book to follow, explaining complex ideas (like how a differential works) in a way that any off roader can understand (and better than many off road instructors!). I have used this book to help both novice and experienced 4x4 drivers improve their technique. The diagrams are clear and precise, and the text is written from the standpoint of a real expert - though never patronising. If you want an introduction to off road driving and vehicles - this is the best book to buy. --Amazon review previous edition

5.0 out of 5 stars THE 4x4 manual book, 27 Jan 2010 By Kisismiki "Flyng Carpet" (Espagne) - See all my reviews This review is from: Four-by-four Driving: Off-roader Driving (Hardcover) Don't waste time and money purchasing books with generalities on the fourwheeldrive,THIS IS THE unique book write by an expert with a long time driving experience and a background on 4wd industry. No other book is so complete with figures and pictures, these book is an concentrate of his other book much large and quite a "physic" manuel on the Expeditionn experience (see above review).Nowhere and nobody write a book so profesionnal, so deep with pictures and shemas.Sheppard is the unique "guru" of the 4WD who can write what he lives and what he teach to real expeidions men (army, ONG, etc...). A must to have and to offer... --Amazon review previous edition

Product Description

DESCRIPTION: The second edition of FOUR-BY-FOUR DRIVING, evolving from four earlier versions of the book (originally commissioned by Land Rover), now also addresses a new demographic those new to the idea of acquiring a four-by-four. Recent winters have reminded us that four-wheel drive is not just for farmers and explorers. It has real application for those dark mornings when earning a crust cannot be put on hold just because the gritters haven t made it down your road yet. Soft-roaders and crossovers are immeasurably smarter than they were even five years ago and, through the ingenuity of the engineers, provide all-wheel grip and everyday utility whilst avoiding the weight, cost and fuel consumption of jungle-jumbo 4x4 leviathans. These vehicles and their various drivelines are fully covered. Important fundamental details about the actual 4x4 system are often all but impossible to find in slickly worded brochures. The complexity of 21st century, computer-test-dependent cars has distanced many from detailed familiarity with how everything works. This book shows that, brochure-speak aside, nothing is so complicated it can t be explained logically. First explaining basics, cutting through the three-letter acronyms, parroted media clichés and gimmicky trade names, the book goes on to give an even-handed look at buying-choice criteria and the ever-converging soft-roader / off-roader divide. . There s a uniquely incisive and practical analysis of the dynamics of towing caravans, cargo or horse-boxes for which many 4x4s are bought. There s a 33-page Expedition basics section too. As in the previous edition, a step-by-step and wide ranging treatment looks at all aspects of using a 4x4 off-road safely and non-damagingly, to either the vehicle or the environment. For the experienced, valuable techniques and advice. For novices, a glimpse of their vehicle s performance envelope and wild-country capability and the elimination of white knuckles.

I've had the original first edition of Tom Sheppard's book (originally written for LR Experience)for some time. This new volume is considerably updated and includes not only lots of really good stuff on automatic drive train 4 x 4 vehicles, but is now also expanded to weigh-up the merits (or otherwise) of other 4 x 4 trucks. It covers a wide range of makes, and although it doesn't go into infinite detail on each one, it certainly gives enough information to help the prospective 4 x 4 buyer to make a choice depending on potential use. The sections on driving techniques are also updated, and I can see this book being useful to prospective and existing owners alike.
