Read cover to cover within 4 days, brilliant book. I did actually read Shary Ward's prior to this, as one of the other reviewrs mentioned, defintely as good as Ward. No gung ho heroics, just sheer professionalism from a married father who looked on his men like children. Portrays what i'm sure everyone who was there felt, the uncertainty, the possibility of injury/ death, failure to recapture the islands, how sure some of his own officers were of not coming back.
Without doubt, a must read for anyone remotely interested in warfare, military history. The sections of the contact he had with his wife and children through the battle are truly touching.
PS his eldest daughter is Miranda Hart, BBC comedy etc
