5.0 out of 5 stars Their first two Motown albums 2 May 2003
By Peter Durward Harris #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
The group had been around since the fifties, but it was only after they joined Motown that they became successful.

The first album, simply titled Four Tops, yielded three American hits –Baby I need your loving, Without the one you love and Ask the lonely. All three singles were released in the UK but none charted. The Fourmost covered Baby I need your loving and had a British hit with it.

The next album, with the equally unoriginal title Second Album, also yielded three American hits, but they were much bigger hits. The album opens with I can’t help myself, which topped the charts and provided them with their first British hit. The lyrics are slightly silly but the song has an irresistible, infectious beat. It’s the same old song just missed the top spot in America and also charted in Britain. Something about you was a top 20 American hit but failed to chart in the UK.

Both of these albums are filled with songs written mostly by Holland-Dozier-Holland with a few by Smokey Robinson and one or two co-writers. Later albums would include plenty of covers but they are absent here. These two albums mark the beginnings of a great career.

5.0 out of 5 stars Speechless 15 Dec 2005
By Steven Majors - Published on Amazon.com

I'm so glad I got this CD with both of those albums combined. I love to hear Levi sing with so much soul and energy and emotion. Thier first hit with Motown "Baby I Need Your Lovin", "Without The One You Love", "Ask The Lonely" "Something About You. But my favorite song on this whole CD is "Where Did You Go". For the life of me I wonder why that was not released s a single. Of course both albums could be 'Greatest Hits'. "Something About you"< " I Cant Help myself", SOmething about you" "Same Old Song". The Top deilivers with the prodution of Holland Dozier Holland. Get this CD and just remember 1964-65 looking at Hullaboo, American Bandstand and the dance shows of the 1960's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Four Tops/Four Tops Second Album 9 Jan 2009
By Adventure Quest - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I can't begin to say enough good things about this CD. For the most part the CD's that are available by the Four Tops have basically all of the same familiar songs with some very slight variations. The Four Tops/Four Tops Second Album allows you to experirence a few songs that were number one hits for the group and others that are like a breath of fresh air for anyone lucky enough to listen. Every song is a gem in its own right. The quality of the recordings is exceptional.
