Product Description

Product Description

The Brontë Sisters, Charlotte, Emily, and Anne are all celebrated writers whose novels are still a hallmark of passion and romance as well as literary masterpieces. In Agnes Grey, Anne Brontë draws from her own experience as a governess to tell the story of a young woman who cares for the unruly and spoiled children of the upper class. In The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, a young woman flees her alcoholic husband and takes refuge in a small village where she is the subject of much speculation. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë tells the story of a young woman who becomes governess and is pulled into the scandalous secret of the man she works for even as she falls in love with him. Written by Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights is the story of the interconnected lives of the families that live at Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, centering on the relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine. Unrequited love and jealousy drive Heathcliff to seek vengeance with unrelenting determination.

A very balanced & useful selection of 4 Bronte books. Tenant of Wildfell Hall especially modern in its evaluation of the role for women in English society.

Jane Eryre has been my favourite novel since I studied it for O level English literature. the Bronte family have always fascinated me, how creative and close they were. The other 2 novels were lesser known to me and I wanted to read them to get a better sense of how the sisters felt. The Tenant of Wetherfell Hall , written by Emily, was given the Inspiration by their brother Bramwell. They loved him dearly but he was unfortunately a womanising alcoholic, the pain this caused is echoed in this novel. At the time ,this book stirred the censors and critics as the subject material was seen as immoral! A single mother, domestic abuse, drinking .. Shocking! Emily writes this from a perspective of a male , which may of added fuel to the fire at the time.
These 4 novels or not for everyone , I understand that but for me they are beautiful written. Contain depth, suspense and human battles that we all face today.
If you fancy a change in reading , please give them a try. Great idea to have the 4 novels in one book.
