Product Description

"Come, listen, listen to the story of the curse that foreshadowed every father's disappearance. Be comforted by your four mothers" Shifra Horn's lyrical novel spans five generations of women and one hundred years of life in Jerusalem. While Amal is despondent at her husband's desertion after the birth of her first child, her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother realise that the birth of a healthy boy means their family's curse has been broken. Motherhood initiates Amal into the secrets of her family's history and the rich tapestry of the lives of her four "mothers": Mazal, whose ill-fated marriage brought about the curse; her daughter Sara, who has healing powers; Sara's daughter, Pnina-Mazal, who can read others' thoughts; and her daughter Geula - Amal's mother - whose sharp intellect and idealism are both a gift and a burden.

Beautiful language and powerful imagery drew me into this superb tale within the first page. The location is Palestine and Israel in the 19th and 20th century. A picture of a little-known Jerusalem is beautifully painted throught the stories of four generations of stratling women. Amal, the present day heroine delves into the legendary family history to discover why her mother and the women before her were abandoned by the men in their lives as they were about to give birth. Unforgettable characters veiled by myth and hearsay will take the reader on the same harrowing journey as Amal and to an ultimately satisfying yet shocking conclusion.

Four Mothers is about four generations of women, who bear daughters. It is as though there is a curse on the family for in every case the father is not around very long. Finally the curse is broken by Amal for she has a son.

The novel is set in Jerusalem. The hot dusty atmsophere of the Middle East is evocative and the writing is luscious, sensual and satisfying. Visual images fill every page but never at the expense of the story which is always riveting.

The novel has been a bestseller in Israel and is beautifully translated. I have bought several copies for friends of all ages who I know will enjoy it.

This is a new author with a unique and original voice. Her four generations of passionate woman are a joy to read about. The writing is sensuous and evocative and really evokes the heat of the Middle East. A novel to be savoured and read over and over again.
