Biography

by William Ruhlmann

Throughout a professional career lasting 50 years, Miles Davis played the trumpet in a lyrical, introspective, and melodic style, often employing a stemless Harmon mute to make his sound more personal and intimate. But if his approach to his instrument was constant, his approach to jazz was dazzlingly protean. To examine his career is to examine the history of jazz ... Read more in Amazon's Miles Davis Store

This is most of the rest of the New York concert that also produced My Funny Valentine (only Autumn Leaves from that concert isn't available on CD, but you can download that as an MP3 from the complete Seven Steps collection). Recorded sound is very good like MFV.

This CD presents the concert's fast (very fast!) pieces so is a rather unbalanced collection. The slow pieces are all on My Funny Valentine where the virtuoso lyricism of Miles and Coleman shines through, which prevents the collection feeling unbalanced. Walkin' is on many other live Miles disc from the early 60s, for several other tracks these are the only available live versions. I don't think other stereo versions by Miles of Four and No Greater Love exist.

It's not a collection I'll be listening to very often as Miles in Europe by the same quintet is a much more enjoyable set, and presents an almost complete concert set in performance order.

This marvellous quintet album was recorded live at the Lincoln Center's Philharmonic Hall in New York on February 12, 1964 with trumpeter/bandleader Miles Davis(1926-1991); the underrated tenor saxophonist George Coleman(b. 1935) who was soon to leave the group; pianist Herbie Hancock(b. 1940); bassist Ron Carter(b. 1937) & the 18-year old drummer Tony Williams(1945-1997) who "lit a big fire under everyone in the group" according to Miles in his autobiography.
All the members of the quintet are on inspired form on six tunes - a mixture of standards and Miles' originals - played at a furious tempo apart from 'There Is No Greater Love'.
Although 'Four & More' doesn't quite reach the heights of the more balladic masterpiece 'My Funny Valentine' from this concert, it contains plenty of exhilarating and creative music that deserves a place in any Miles Davis collection.

Typical Davis - I had not heard many of the tracks before so it was a nice surprise.
Good CD
