Australia released, PAL/Region 0 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Biographies, Cast/Crew Interview(s), Documentary, Interactive Menu, Scene Access, Trailer(s), SYNOPSIS: It was the sporting equivalent of conquering Everest: running a mile in under four minutes. A feat long thought impossible, in 1954 two supremely gifted athletes emerged as frontrunners to break the milestone: England's Roger Bannister and Australia's John Landy. Though Bannister will be remembered as the first man to break the mile, this thrilling mini-series (brilliantly scripted by David Williamson - The Club, Dons Party) continues the action to the 1954 Empire Games when Landy and Bannister have their first head-to-head clash in the so-called race of the century - for Landy, winning the race in a record time would establish him as the greatest runner of his generation. The Four Minute Mile is not only a classic saga of human endurance set around one of the greatest moments in sporting history, but a testament to one of Australia's greatest sporting champions. ...The Four Minute Mile ( The 4 Minute Mile )

Historical and a real feeling of the characters and issues facing them. An exciting time in athletics and a gripping exploration of the human spirit through many years of obstacles, development and triumph's. Not just about the 4 minute mile but about the many personalities involved in the years before and after, and their supporters. The help needed to excel was only just becoming apparent to sportsmen and how professional coaches techniques developed to become more precise is fascinating.

The other many great runners whose stories are explored make the tale much deeper and more interesting; no one outside the sport remembers Landy now (he's the runner represented on the cover), but he was a great; how he became one is a marvellous counterbalance to Bannister's own tale.

This is a rich tale of real human endeavour and gripping for sportsmen and spectators alike.

If you are a runner, you will enjoy this movie 2 Jan. 2013

This movie does a great job of highlighting the people in the race for breaking the four minute mile barrier. If you are a runner, you will be motivated. My cousin and I watched this movie the night before racing a marathon where we attempted and succeeded in qualifying for the Boston Marathon.

Runner's World Magazine published an article on the best running movies and this one made the list. RW stated that this movie is far better than ESPN's "Four Minutes" movie... and I agree with them. There needs to be a DVD of this movie available!
It's quite good and is very true to the events as described ... 2 Jan. 2015

This is a 1988 made-for-TV (Australian Broadcasting Corporation/BBC co-production) miniseries that aired in two segments. It's quite good and is very true to the events as described in Neal Bascomb's extensively referenced history of the events leading up to the Empire Games, "The Perfect Mile." While it focuses on Roger Bannister and his teammates at Oxford, the movie also tells the story of Australia's John Landy, Finland's Denis Johansson, and America's Wes Santee and their quests to be the first to run a four-minute mile.

The acting is quite good, the costumes and sets very believable and the story is appropriately paced, though three hours long.

I especially enjoyed it because I'm a runner, but there's a lot here that the general sports fan would enjoy.
Pretty Good 5 Dec. 2012

This may not be as good as the ESPN movie Four Minutes that came out later, but it's not bad either. I think you'll enjoy it.
