I absolutely loved this book. It is written quite basically, but it packs a powerful punch: a humble book that instantly draws you into the life in the East End of London back in the early 1900s. Some of the stories might seem inhumane / barbaric to us but, as Mrs Foakes puts it in what is the most poignant statement for me: "remember, this was yesterday's world, a world seemingly far removed from today, a world of people who were just as you are but without opportunities of knowledge".
Yet although life was tough back then, there are also tales of an incredible community spirit and childish joys at the most simple things that are somewhat lost on us in modern times. So in this respect it is quite uplifting, especially as you look back at this bygone era and then are thankful for all the amenities we often take for granted today.
I was very sad to finish reading Four Meals for Fourpence, I shed a few tears at the end, at the beautiful final sentence. Highly recommended.
