Review

"This is a lively, lucid exposition of the four evangelists' portraits of Jesus. The evangelists' distinctive emphases are set out with flair, imagination and theological sensitivity. Novices and old hands alike will read the Gospels with new eyes. Four Gospels, One Jesus? is a considerable achievement: scholarly yet accessible". Graham Stanton, Lady Margaret's Professor of Divinity, Cambridge. "This is a lively, lucid exposition of the four evangelists' portraits of Jesus. "He (Burridge) has produced a beautiful, readable overview of the four gospels, rich in symbols, highlighting the different and complementary portraits they paint of the central figure, whose biography they record. A book to buy and cherish." Michael Green, Adviser in Evangelism to the Archbishops of Canterbury and York. "Here is an introduction to the gospels which, because it combines so well prayer and worship and scholarship, has a vitality and freshness about it which I find immensely appealing." David Hope, Archbishop of York"

'Four Gospels, One Jesus' is a completely new edition of the widely used student text which has sold over 12,000 copies. The book has been updated in the light of recent academic writings by Stanton, Hengel and N.T. Wright. It also takes into account recent study of the effect and reception of the gospels. Unexpected! 22 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
I bought this book purely because it was on the list for a course I am attending. I thought, "this will be boring", but I was wrong.

The introduction to the book had me interested from the word go, describing our famous and renowned leader Sir Winston Churchill from four different perspectives. This gets the reader thinking about Jesus. All the gospels vary slightly in the way they talk about Jesus, His life, His miracles etc., and many say that they are contradictory. This book helps to show that four different people can talk about the same person, Jesus Christ, in four different ways, and yet they are talking about the same person.

It is a good book for beginners in the study of the Four Gospels, easy to read yet mind-stretching and offering challenges.

This book has a separate chapter on each of the 4 Gospels, in the order in which they are thought to have been written. It relates each to the traditional symbol used for the writer, linking it to the content and style he uses very helpfully.
