Product Description

How "deconstructed" can a group get? How about just one vocal, one bass, one guitar, and a basic beat supplied by stomping on a mini-tambourine-doohickey? That's exactly what everyone's favorite storyteller/narrator, Les Claypool, is incorporating in his new band, Duo de Twang. While Les is still pulling double duty with the Primus lads, he has also found the time to unite with his old buddy, Bryan Kehoe, who fans will recognize from several past Claypool projects, and also as one of the main actors from Les's hilarious jam band mockumentary, ''Electric Apricot: Quest for Festeroo". But unlike Primus, DDT focuses more on the Americana/rootsy side of things - as heard throughout the band's debut recording Four Foot Shack, to be released via ATO Records. And as evidenced by DDT's live shows and debut, Les and Bryan mostly mix traditional tunes, popular covers, and readings of Primus classics (all of which are usually barely recognizable when compared to the original versions). Case in point, the inclusion of "Battle of New Orleans," "Stayin' Alive," "Man in the Box," "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver," and "Jerry Was A Race Car Driver" on DDT's debut disc.

4.0 out of 5 stars Get a hang of it. 14 April 2014

Les Claypool knows how to cover his own (Primus & Saucage) songs as well as other classics. IE Staying Alive is a new classic in this version :-).

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius, back to roots for the Primus frontman 15 Mar 2014

Superb mix of bluegrass and Claypools absurdist black humour. The cover of "staying alive" is worth the asking price alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 7 Feb 2014

A few brilliant standout tracks on this album, and the rest are good. A unique evolution of Les Claypool's signature style. I've got it on repeat in my pickup. Now all I need is a load of illegal moonshine in the back, and one red arm.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Classics; Kehoe & Claypooled 4 Feb 2014
By xi34-com - Published on Amazon.com

We all know Les Claypool is one of the most impressive bassists alive but until you have heard this album you may not have gotten the chance to hear his talent in such a raw form without multiple other musicians sharing the mix. Bryan Kehoe does a great job accompanying Les on acoustic guitar and together the two of them have created something really special here. I have some reservations about giving an album with so many cover songs 5-stars but in this case I think it's appropriate and I would actually like to hear more songs remade in their very unique style.

In case you were wondering, here are the origins of the songs featured on Four Foot Shack:
1. Four Foot Shack -- the only original song on this album
2. Wynona's Big Brown Beaver -- from "Tales from the Punchbowl" by Primus
3. Amos Moses -- from "Georgia Sunshine" by Jerry Reed
4. Red State Girl -- from "Of Fungi and Foe" by Les Claypool
5. The Bridge Came Tumblin' Down -- from "My Stompin' Grounds" by Stompin' Tom Connors
6. Boonville Stomp -- from "Of Fungi and Foe" by Les Claypool
7. Stayin' Alive -- from "Saturday Night Fever: The Original Movie Sound Track" by Bee Gees
8. Rumble of the Diesel -- from "Of Whales and Woe" by Les Claypool
9. Pipeline -- from "Pipeline" by The Chantays
10. Buzzards of Green Hill -- from "Purple Onion" by Les Claypool's Frog Brigade
11. Hendershot -- from "Highball with the Devil" by Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerel & "Live Frogs Vol. 1" by Les Claypool's Frog Brigade
12. Man in the Box -- from "Facelift" by Alice in Chains
13. D's Diner - from "Purple Onion" by Les Claypool's Frog Brigade
14. Battle of New Orleans -- from "The Spectacular Johnny Horton" by Johnny Horton (originally written by Jimmy Driftwood)
15. Jerry Was a Race Car Driver -- from "Sailing the Seas of Cheese" by Primus

The simplicity of this album is its specialty.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fresh take on Les Claypool's crunchy, percussive, deep, slappy, satisfying bass tunes 22 Feb 2014
By Aron Camenzind - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
First, if there is nothing else quite listening to Les Claypool slap a bass guitar for you, along with the satisfying quirks and the excitement that comes from his percussive and so satisfyingly non-traditional bass lines, then you will absolutely be tickled by this album. There are of course people who won't have the palette for listening to this with people who are uninitiated with this type of sound, and I guess I feel sorry for them, because nothing fills me with more energy than this music. It's like an addiction I can never quite satiate, and it continues to feel good.

Les and Bryan Kehoe, with this album, found a way to give you a similar type of satisfaction from those salty bass lines that you may be familiar with, all while making them seem altogether fresh, new, and as exciting as ever. My only wish is that Les would release albums more often.

This is pure gold for anyone who enjoys Les Claypool's humor and style.

Straight campfire goof off jam.

It's what would be heard playing if Dr. Seuss had a taco truck.

Richly entertaining, foot stomping, folksy, dance-able ging-wild grooves. Hard not to sing along to " Rumble of the Diesel. A surprising faithful cover of Pipeline; and the tenor chorus is impressive. A refreshing re-styling of Stayin' Alive. REALLY enjoyed the Battle Of New Orleans. This is a must have for any Les Claypool. Even folks who never heard of Primus or Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains will love this. Can't wait to pre-order the sequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Lot of Fun 28 April 2014
By ZUCKMEISTER - Published on Amazon.com

I dare you to try to listen to this cd without smiling. The versions of the tunes included in this collection are just a lot of fun, while at the same time demonstrating Les Claypool's great bass chops. Of course, you have to be a fan of Claypool's quirky vocals and odd sense of humor…I've often said that he is one of those artists I'd hate if I didn't love him. It's even better than I thought it'd be given that the songs are all covers or reworkings…I've had it in my steady rotation for over two months and I seem to dig it more with each listen.
