Funnily enough, Ellman does not try to house these four Dublin characters together as indelibly marked by the city's tarring brush; rather he paints them where they belong, Wilde in Oxford, Joyce in exile, Beckett in London and Paris, and Yeats reinvigoured in his post-vasectomy years. He does not attempt to smooth their differences; but recounts their many meetings and grudging respect with interest and thoughtfulness. As well as being, separately, four fine critical essays, they form together an unforced continuous line, drawn by a leading critic with customary artistry.

Quite an old yellowed copy but otherwise in good shape.
