A group of Brazilian students kidnap the American ambassador as an act of resistance against their right-wing military government, but the emotional tension soon wears a crack in their starry-eyed idealism. Thoughtful, even-handed direction examines the event from a variety of perspectives. Based on the memoirs of Green Party member Fernando Gabeira. Academy Award Nominations--Best Foreign Film.

Fantastic film, thriller, fraught with danger, true story of the kidnap of the american ambassador to Brazil during the US backed, military repression in that country of the 60's and 70's.Military and police death squads, brutal torture and 'dissapearences' were opposed by a motley crew of left wing students, radicals and even church groups. Film captures the fear, paranoia and atmosphere of the times like no other I have seen. To all accounts the film story follows the reality quite faithfully as a bunch of assorted 'freedom fighters' kidnap an american diplomat to hold in ransom against the release of some of their comrades. Top actors, mainly from TV Globo, and tight, controlled direction from Bruno Barreto. Not easy to find, I had to order my copy from Miami, but well worth the hassle.

Fascinating, true story of the kidnapping of the American Ambassador to Brazil
(a terrific performance by Alan Arkin) in 1969 by a mostly young, nervous group of
terrorist freedom fighters.

While not quite up to the brilliance of films like Costa-Gavras' "Z", it has much of that kind of
growing complexity and power.

Most interesting is how the film keeps forcing us to re-think our feelings about all
the characters on both sides.

Perhaps a little obvious or on the nose at times, but packs a punch by the end.
