Product Description

Are you ready for an assault on Pepper!?
AVID Jazz here presents four classic Art Pepper albums on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD. `The Return Of Art Pepper', `Modern Art', `Quartet' and `Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section' which is heard here for the first time in a natural stereo soundstage.
Art Pepper was born in Gardena, California in 1925 and started his musical career playing the clarinet at age 9. However the young lad was extremely unhappy with this instrument and by age 12 and to the benefit of all jazz fans he had moved on to the alto sax! Early idols included Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw and Muggsy Spanier and he would be influenced by Lester Young, Johnny Hodges and Ben Webster from whom he would discover his love of the great jazz ballad . Known primarily as being from the West Coast Cool School as featured on three of our albums, we are delighted to include the classic `Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section' where Art is joined by three East Coasters, namely Miles Davis' old rhythm section Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones.
All four albums have been digitally re-mastered for probably the finest sound quality ever!

This album has to be one of the bargains of the year. Art Pepper swings his way through 80 minutes of superb jazz from four of his mid to late fifties albums. Accompanied on three albums by the finest musicians from the US West Coast and on one by the 1956 Miles Davis rhythm section of Red Garland, Paul Chambers & Philly Joe Jones, he plays a variety of music, from originals to blues to ballads. He is the only modern musician I've heard play the New Orleans traditional tune - Tin Roof Blues.
I can recommend every track and the insert notes are very informative with full personnel and recording dates. Just get online and get it!!

Four albums of one artists is a lot in once go. But Art Pepper was not a musician I knew much of before listening to these albums and I am glad I have done it. Each album has a theme to bind it together. It is all highly listenable: indeed Mambo De La Pinta had me grooving round the kitchen. This is jazz of the 1960's: varied in tone, usually great fun and a great listen.

What bothers me - and why the rating - is the sound quality. I have many albums of music recorded around this time and they come up sounding fresh and alive. I'm not sure what happened but these sound as though they were mastered by playing the album and recording from a microphone held near speakers.

This may not matter to you, but I was saddened that the performance was missing the living sound that brings music like this to life.

The other reviewers have mentioned what great music this is and that's undeniable. It's sad then to have to give a bad mark for the exceptionally poor sound quality - this is definitely NOT the fault of the recordings, this is simply poor mastering from cheap second hand sources. These transfers are muffled-sounding and lacking in any sort of audio presence. I suppose this sort of corner-cutting is reflected in the price but it's shameful and not how Art Pepper's legacy should be remembered ...

Art Pepper is such a talented and smooth sax player, producing one of the best sounds. Although he perhaps does not get the same recognition as some of the other jazz greats, he is pure musical genius. Great to listen to if you a serious fan or if you just want to tune into some great jazz.

I've read a lot of reviews of Avid releases and decided to make up my own mind on the issue of sound quality. I bought this Art Pepper collection as a download and the double CD Duke Ellington - Three Classic Albums and More (Historically Speaking - The Duke / Duke Ellington Presents / Ellington 55). I then bought Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section and Ellington 56 and took a good deal of time comparing sound quality.

I can see how, to some people, the Avid releases represent good value. They don't to me. To me, both Avids sounded muddled, muddy and bass heavy. 'Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section' on OJC and 'Ellington '56' on Charly sounded crystal clear by comparison.

If you can't tell the difference or really don't care, then the Avid is the one to go for and you won't regret it. If you are a person for whom sound matters in music as taste matters in food then don't touch the Avid with a bargepole.

It gives fabulous insight into the work of one of the most esteemed alto-sax players of modern jazz... Basically cool in his approach, Art managed to remain passionate in his playing, without following the Charlie Parker mold of improvising on alto. Although on three of four albums he works with west-coast musicians, the true gem of this collection is the album "Art Pepper meets The Rhythm Section" - his collaboration with Paul Chambers, Red Garland and Philly Joe Jones (Miles Davis' rhythm at the time) proved how compatible his style was to the "east coast" players...
Additionally, since three out of four albums are with quartet, it is great that the first CD starts with the album "The Return of Art Pepper", where he struts his stuff in the company of Jack Sheldon on trumpet. SO:

CD 1 - "The Return of Art Pepper" - J. Sheldon-tp, Russ Freeman -p, Leroy Vinnegar -b, Shelly Manne-dm + "Modern Art" - R. Freeman -p, Ben Tucker -b, Chuck Flores -dm
CD 2 - last song from "Modern Art" + "Meets the Rhythm Section" - see above + "The Art Pepper Quartet" - R. Freeman-p, B. Tucker-b, Gary Frommer-dm

Highly recommended.

Great music for a great price, but the soundquality isn't very good.
I know for a fact most single album CD's have better- even very good SQ.
I guess it's true here, when it sounds to good to be true, it isn't..
