AVID Jazz here presents four classic Modern Jazz Quartet and John Lewis albums, including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD. 'The Modern Jazz Quartet At Music Inn - Vol Two', 'Music From Odds Against Tomorrow', 'The John Lewis Piano' and the Original Music from the soundtrack to 'Odds Against Tomorrow'. It has taken us a while to release the follow up to our first Music Inn date (AMSC945) but the waiting is over and here it is complete with the great tenor man Sonny Rollins on two tracks, 'Bags Groove' and 'Night In Tunisia'! We also include two different takes on the music John Lewis composed for the movie 'Odds Against Tomorrow' the second film score of Lewis' that we have featured in this series, the other being 'No Sun In Venice' (AMSC976). The soundtrack features the MJQ along with a full orchestra and includes such classic jazz names as Bill Evans, Jim Hall and Gunther Schuller and is conducted by none other than John Lewis himself. The music from the film is presented by the MJQ alone, both were recorded in 1959. We have divided these two takes with the first album devoted primarily to the solo piano of John Lewis 'The John Lewis Piano'. Here the great man is joined by a small and select group of musicians, Connie Kay and Percy Heath and on guitar on four separate pieces, Barry Galbraith and Jim Hall.

Format:Audio CD
As the package suggests, these are four great albums featuring the music of John Lewis. His best work has always been the interplay with Milt Jackson and the MJQ but he created interesting dates outside his safety zone. The soundtrack of the movie Odds Against Tomorrow contains fine but short arrangements that suit the mood of the film. For lengthier workouts the MJQ album contrats nicely. John Lewis is a class act.

These Avid releases boast about the sound. Most are poor. This on is dire. Listen to the piano on CD 2. Have you heard worse?

I was very disappointed with this collection. CD1 Music Inn and Odds MJQ Tracks 1 - 12 contain two fine John Lewis albums well reproduced. But, Oh Dear, the sound on CD1 Track 13 and CD2 Tracks 1 - 7 from the John Lewis Piano album is awful. Not having heard a vinyl copy I don't know whether the fault is the original recording or Avid's transfer. I suspect the latter given that all other John Lewis recordings that I've heard have been well recorded. Then finally we have on CD2 Tracks 9 - 26 a series of disjointed snippets from the Odds Soundtrack that I found very unengaging. In fact completely forgetable.
For the price I suppose I shouldn't complain, I have got one almost completely good CD. But this is not a patch on the earlier John Lewis reissue. So come on Avid, make the next one a belter!!
