Product Description

Foundations of Psychology is a new edition of the bestselling introductory psychology textbook written by the acclaimed Nicky Hayes. This text is consistently praised for its accessible yet comprehensive coverage, its clarity and the real world examples that are used to explain concepts. Keeping the content of the previous edition, it spans the six central areas of psychology; cognitive psychology; individual and abnormal psychology; social psychology; developmental psychology; and comparative psychology.

From the Publisher

A deserved bestseller - a clear & comprehensive introduction
Have you ever wondered why Margaret Thatcher deepened her speaking voice when she became British Prime Minister? how the managers responsible for approving the launch of the ill-fated Challenger space-shuttle reached their disastrous decision? why birds sing more intensively in the early morning? how TV ‘psychics’ bend spoons?

Nicky Hayes’ exciting and accessible text, Foundations of Psychology, answers these questions and many more. Designed for anybody who is learning about psychology for the first time, this comprehensive book explains complex ideas using clear and understandable language.

By reading this book you will discover how historical contexts and the development of the various movements in psychology have helped to shape the subject; fascinating real-world applications of psychological theories; the latest international research findings and methodologies, along with contemporary debates.

Foundations of Psychology is an essential textbook for budding psychologists as well as students of other disciplines who need an introduction to the subject. The book is accompanied by an extensive supporting website where you can explore the subject further and test your knowledge.

This is a mammoth book, one to be dipped into on an 'as-needs' basis rather than read from start to finish. If you are looking for in-depth information on any particular subject this isn't the book to buy but if you want an easy to use resource that covers the basics and the most salient points across this interesting and large field of study it's well worth buying.

I am a student nurse and have found it invaluable for completing documentation and assignments. It's very easy to read and well laid out, the chapters are sub-divided; key words in the text are highlighted and information is supported with diagrams, colour, tables and bulleted lists making it comfortably accessible to different learning styles.

It is well referenced - making tracking down the seminal and/or other relevant texts fairly simple, has an extensive bibliography, a good index and a glossary to add meaning to terminology. At the end of each chapter there are self-assessment questions and practice essay questions for those who want to test out their own understanding. The book is supported by a website but the resources there are primarily for teachers/lecturers rather than students, although still worth a visit; each chapter though also has a list of websites where further information can be found, although some of these don't seem to exist anymore.

This book may seem expensive to students on limited income and because of this I dithered for quite some time before I bought it but it's now become the most used and useful book on my shelves.
