This book is written in a language that any student, OT technician or assistant can understand. It gives you a good base on which to progress you education further into what is Occupational therapy. I found this book one of those that you constantly dip into when writing essays and assignments.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best literary investment you will make in your OT career, 2 Jul 2006
By Mark W. Cowell "Sue Cowell" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Foundations for Practice in Occupational Therapy aims to provides an overview of the theoretical infrastructure of the profession, from a contemporary perspective. The text is arranged into five key sections. The first section introduces the reader to concepts that define and underpin the theoretical and philosophical basis of the profession, from outside and within the discipline. Duncan acknowledges the eclectic infrastructure of the profession, by exploring the diverse range of philosophical and sociological paradigms that have contributed to, and impacted on the profession (such as positivism, phenomenology and Marxism). He builds on this to explore the historical shift in the professional paradigm, from a reductionist perspective, to a holistic, client-centred approach of the use of occupation as a restorative strategy. Duncan then provides an overview of the theoretical foundations of our specialist role within contemporary healthcare - defining the role occupational therapy; the process of interventions, and introducing conceptual models of practice and frames of references. Throughout this section Duncan explores the contemporary process of theory development and application, and highlights this by introducing the MOHO scholarship of practice as a means of developing evidence-based knowledge, and tools of practice.

The second section explores conceptual models of practice in greater depth, by visiting familiar models of practice including the Model of Human Occupation, and the Canadian Model of Human Occupation. Forsyth and Kielhofner provide a clear application of the Model of Human Occupation and associated tools (standardised assessments), via use of a case study. The recently emerged Kawa Model of Practice is also explored, which emphasises the need for occupational therapists to ensure that their interventions are culturally sensitive. To complement this discussion, frames of reference are then clearly explained in relation to conceptual models of practice. These frames of reference are then explored more fully in the third section of this text. This section providing a theoretical understanding of their origins, and their application in practice. Section four takes an in-depth look at the emergence and contribution of occupational science to the profession, and the importance of research in developing our understanding of occupation on health promotion. The final section explores clinical reasoning and decision making in practice. Paterson and Somerfield-Mann explore clinical reasoning as a phenomena, and frames this within a contemporary perspective by acknowledging the impact of current health and social care initiatives - such as evidence-based practice, national initiative frameworks, and continuing professional development.

Duncan, and his co-authors, have produced a comprehensive occupational therapy text that is an invaluable resource to students, occupational therapy practioners and educators alike. It's accessibility means that is will also be of use to other professions who wish to gain an invaluable insight into the unique contribution of occupational therapy to health and social care. The structuring of the text means that it reads succinctly from chapter to chapter, or alternatively readers can dip into the text to access key themes. Each chapter of the text provides a concise and clear introduction to the topic area, discusses relevant contemporary issues, and highlights implications for practice. The author and co-authors have strived to write their chapters in an informative and engaging manner, whilst encouraging the reader to develop and evaluative approach to the subject being discussed. This book should be a staple text in educational and clinical departments alike, as a resource for understanding theory, and it's development, within occupational therapy.
