The first edition of Foundations for Osteopathic Medicine was the only comprehensive, current osteopathic textbook. It provided a multidisciplinary coverage of osteopathic theory and practice in the basic sciences, family and primary care specialisms. Directed towards the undergraduate and practitioner, it demonstrated a wide variety of osteopathic techniques and diagnostic principles. This 2nd edition includes new chapters on:
* biomechanics, microbiology and infectious diseases
* health promotion and maintenance
* osteopathic psychiatry
* emergency medicine
* neuromusculoskeletal medicine
* rehabilitation
* sports medicine
A welcome inclusion are sections that broaden the clinical perspective on what osteopathic intervention can provide. These include progressive inhibition of neuromuscular structures, manipulation of the viscera, A.T. Still (classical) osteopathic methods, treatment of acutely ill hospital patients, somatic dysfunction, clinical research and trials, outcomes research and its implications on teaching of osteopathic medicine in an age of evidence based imperatives, and bio-behavioral interactions with disease and health.
This text is unique in its broad sweep of what constitutes the practice of osteopathy in the United States, if not in the United Kingdom. Clearly osteopaths have been unable to penetrate the existing NHS provision for hospitalised patient care in the UK, even after the Osteopaths Act (1993), was effected. Nevertheless this textbook shows the potential benefits for employing the unique approach osteopathic medicine can offer in both primary care as well as other settings.
In its second incarnation, the direction for future editions will continue to provide a complementary medical approach to patient wellbeing. As such it will allow osteopaths to develop their practice whilst the healthcare climate changes, and issues such as revalidation and scope for practice are important considerations.
