"Foundations of Literacy" identifies the seven strands of practice for the foundation years on which the successful teaching of literacy skills depends. The new edition is fully updated with the latest research and practical advice for helping children build a solid foundation for literacy. This book outlines seven strands of practice for the foundation years upon which successful teaching of literacy skills depends. Written by literacy specialist Sue Palmer and early years consultant Ros Bayley, it draws on the advice and experience of many professionals involved with this age group, including speech and language therapists, literacy and music specialists, early years advisers, developmental psychologists and - above all - practitioners from around the UK and, indeed, from across Europe. "Foundations of Literacy" provides fun activities for three- to six-year-old children, designed to develop the skills, concepts and knowledge underpinning literacy. Alongside are clear explanations of the research and reasoning on which they are based. It also provides practical advice on helping children transfer this learning into their own, child-initiated activities, to build a genuine and solid foundation for literacy.

This is a fabulous book! The best early years literacy book I have ever come across. Sue Palmer and Ros Bayley have shared their expertise to write an incredibly thorough and practical book. There are so many fantastic ideas for the classroom to develop all areas of children's learning. All their ideas are highly developmentally appropriate and come from thorough research. The book really illustratse how we as a country are doing our children wrong by pressuring formal learning too early, with children not having sufficient opportunities to develop the essential foundations! The book reminds us that Sweden and Finland have the greatest literacy outcomes in the world and yet their children do not start any formal eduation until age 7. Follow the ideas in this book and I am certain all children will have the very best foundations to succeed in all aspects of language and literacy throughout their lives.

I am certain this book will become my teaching bible and I intend to keep it in close proximity at all times!
