Product Description

Review

"I consider that is it one of the best and most useful books available for the purpose of instructing undergraduate students or engineers about helicopters, their flight mechanics and design. It is a very readable book considering that the subject matter is scientific and basically quite complicated, and it covers areas that are not to be found in other helicopter texts." Professor, City University, London, UK.

Product Description

The unique design problems which helicopters produce are many and complex. Through practical examples and illustrated case studies, supported by all the relevant theory, this primer text provides an accessible introduction which guides the reader through the theory, design, construction and operation of helicopters. Fundamental performance and control equations are developed, from which the book explores the rotor aerodynamic and dynamic characteristics of helicopters. Example calculations and performance predictions, reflecting current practice, show how to assess the feasibility of a design. This book tackles the theory, design, construction and operation of helicopters. It is illustrated with many practical examples and case studies. It provides the fundamental equations describing performance and dynamic behaviour.

Truly an excellent book. Without a doubt this is the best book if you wish to attain a full understanding of helicopters and the challenges associated with their design.

At the beginning of each chapter there is a section explaining the concepts involved and then a development of the theory and the mathematics. Although there is enough in the book to interest an enthusiast it is on balance more suited to students or people starting to get involved in the design of helictopers.

The only book to come close in my mind is J. Seddon's book "Introduction to Helicopter Aerodynamics". But that did not go into as much practical detail. One may also note that Simon Newman was involved in the later editions of that book. Dr Newman really has a gift for explaining the physical principles with diagrams etc, but also his mathematical reasoning is clear and well laid out.

I bought the book for my son's coursework in a Powered Lift module, as part of an Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering degree course.
He describes the content as really good, easy to understand and very comprehensive. It is certainly the best text book out there on this subject area.

However the reason it does not get 5 stars is the paper , print, binding , and general presentation of the book are not of sufficient quality to merit a price tag of £20 , let alone the £90+ that is sells for. The quality is quite frankly very disappointing. I accept this book probably has a very limited audience and will only sell in very small numbers, but to produce it so cheaply and charge so much smacks of being a rip-off.

A rewarding book 31 Dec 2009
By Dr. Walter Deinhard - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
After I tried to study foundations of helicopter flight on my own with some other books I took to this one and got fascinated about helicopter theory.

The chapters are:
Introduction
Rotorcraft configuration
The rotor in hover
The rotor in axial flight - climb and decent
The rotor in forward flight
Dynamics of the rotor
Autorotative performance
Blade dynamics
Helicopter trim
Vibration and it's transmission
Tail rotors
Ground resonance
Rotor speed governing
Methods of calculating helicopter power, fuel consumption andmission performance
Epilogue - windmill

The book is a very rewarding pleasure to read!
The topics are motivating, text and derivations are clear and well balanced. You can study the book without ever getting stuck when you have a good background in aeronautical engineering.

I would wish the Author writes another book about helicopter flight dynamics and control as well.
