In my youth, some forty years ago,I was so much thrilled by Asimov's books that I wrote him a letter, without much hope of a reply. To my surprise I received a post card , handwritten by the master himself !I still cherish it.

Isaac Asimov was a very clever man,a very creative man, with an acute sense of humour. And a prolific writer as well.It is not, however, so much the -excellent- plots and the impeccable"execution"of his stories that made him a master of science fiction. It is the initial idea, the basic concept, that sets him apart from most of his peers.A brilliantly original idea is always the core of his creations. From the "one night every thousand years"idea of "Nightfall",to the "psychochistory"idea of the Foundation series(which turns out to be something far more significant....),from the "three laws of robotics" to the "parallel universe",Asimov comes up with astonishing new ideas, and comes up first. He does not "improve"the work of others before him.He "invents"new fields and comes up with new concepts.

Mind you,he played it a bit safe.A humans only universe and the total absence of sex and,to a degree, politics, in his stories alleviates negative social (or State)reaction, which was pretty common during the MacCarthian era in the U.S..But when challenged on this field (no sex,no aliens)he responded. And how ! By writing "The Gods themselves",where he introduced a parallel universe,an alien(Very Alien !)race and a detailed description of their triad-based reproductive process(alien sex !)in a most spectacular and gripping way !

The "Foundation"saga is,however, another cup of tea.An epic lasting ages,an astonishing trilogy.A galactic empire at its decline.

The book was recommended to me by a friend. It is quickly becoming one of my favorite books. The binding is beautiful, and the book has a stylish dust cover. It came before the estimated date.

Asimov's "Foundation" series is a milestone in scifi. A rather distant milestone; we've come a long way since then. I read this constantly as a teenager, and loved it, but nowadays some readers may find the exposition a little too simple and linear.

It's very much human-focussed scifi, without dwelling too deeply on advanced technology or using it as a deus ex machina.

One of the science fiction classics of my youth. Years ago I lent three paperbacks of the Foundation trilogy to a friend and they never returned the middle one. I really wanted to re-read it and thought the single Everyman hardback edition of the trilogy would be good to keep. I have purchased various Everyman books in the past and have always been impressed. This time was no disappointment - the presentation is good, as is the quality of the book. The inclusion of a Biographical Note, Bibliography and Chronology of Asimov's life is useful for reference and gives the book a completeness and makes it rather more special than it otherwise might be. Well worth the ten pounds it cost - very good value.

I bought this book because this is the trilogy that turned me on to science fiction at the age of 12 - 'when Adam were a lad'. A school friend loaned me a copy of the three novels and I read them avidly. I've been a fan of Asimov's novels ever since and have read this trilogy lots of times over the years. This nicely produced edition replaces a very battered one I got a long time ago, and will no doubt be read many times yet.

Excellent introduction and author chronology, great readability and nice red hardcover. Regarding the work itself it's way beyond my rating: a true must for the genre and just more extraordinary by how much it's perfectly contemporary and relevant. In a perfect world it would belong in secondary school curricula.
