Book Description

29 Oct 2010 Everyman's Library (Alfred A. Knopf, Inc.)

It is the story of the Galactic Empire, crumbling after twelve thousand years of rule. And it is the particular story of psycho-historian Hari Seldon, the only man who can see the horrors the future has in store: a dark age of ignorance, barbarism and violence that will last for thirty thousand years. Gathering together a band of courageous men and women, Seldon leads them to a hidden location at the edge of the galaxy where he hopes they can preserve human knowledge and wisdom against all who would destroy them.

Asimov went on to add numerous sequels and prequels to the trilogy, building up what has become known as the Foundation series, but it is the original three books, first published in the Forties and Fifties, which remain the most powerful, imaginative and breathtaking.

5.0 out of 5 stars A longtime favourite 15 Aug 2011
By Rossett
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book because this is the trilogy that turned me on to science fiction at the age of 12 - 'when Adam were a lad'. A school friend loaned me a copy of the three novels and I read them avidly. I've been a fan of Asimov's novels ever since and have read this trilogy lots of times over the years. This nicely produced edition replaces a very battered one I got a long time ago, and will no doubt be read many times yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic thought provoking Novel 18 Jan 2011
Format:Hardcover
Stimulating challenging ideas, expressed in a sci-fi setting.
Today marketing, business, and politicians are constantly seeking ways to predict soceity's next moves/desires/investmets/prejuices etc.
Here is a book where the predictions have been made . . .society has been understood in all it's uglyness and is ordered and predictable.
For people today, it is the stuff of history to know what is going to happen in our lives, so much change so quickly is commonplace.
But How would it feel to believe the future was pre-determined and mapped out ?
And how would such a complacent society cope with the occurance of an unanticipated crisis ?

These ideas are explored in this all time classic triology. Read it.
