5.0 out of 5 stars Saving Private Polaroids, 24 Oct 2008
By Colin J. Herd "colin j herd" (Edinburgh) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
i was very kindly given this book as a present and the person who bought it for me was spot on when they thought it would be right up my street. And that's just where many of these polaroid photographs were found, right up somebody's street, in someone's yard, on a picnic table, in a puddle etc. etc. Each photo is lovingly spaced out onto a page with a short descritpion of where it was found on the facing page and so there is plenty of lebensraum for you to digest each one. There are some dowwnright beautiful, some frankly bizarre and some very intriguing. Some battered, some bruised and some very fuzzy indeed. This book is a treat.

3.0 out of 5 stars Really, really disappointing, 11 Feb 2009
By Anna (London) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Polaroid photos are mesmeric and beautiful... there's something magical about them. The white frame, and the fact that a photo taken 30 seconds ago looks vintage - polaroids make you feel like you're peering through a window or looking glass to something that happened in the 1970s.

So this book ought to be extraordinary. Combine polaroid photography, and the voyeurism of seeing into other people's worlds and it should be the best example of books like this. But it isn't.

The photos on the front cover aren't included and, unfortunately, they're the best ones. There are several which are just glare, from the sun, or from the flash reflecting, I don't know. Many are blurred to the point where you can't quite decipher what's going on, and the bulk are made up of photos of empty roads, or buildings or pieces of furniture.

There are several of people, and one or 2 that will make you wonder what on earth was afoot at the time - you'll be immensely tickled - but they've put all the best ones on the front cover and, again, not repeated them inside. It's disappointing as it misrepresents the content an awful lot. However, the accompanying notes to say where each polaroid was found are interesting, and certainly add to it.

I don't regret buying it; I'd coveted it for months. But have now bought some polaroid film for myself, and am in the process of covering my fridge in little windows to 40 years ago... it's much more fun.
