"'Jennings' expose of dirty dealing and venal corruption will change the way you look at professional sports forever.' Amazon review of The Lords of the Rings"

Product Description

Andrew Jennings, the world's foremost investigative sports reporter, spent four years delving into the dark side of 'the beautiful game'. The result is this explosive and damning expose of the officials that run football's world governing body FIFA - a story of how the 'men in suits' put personal ambition and money before the fans on the terraces. No individual has managed to penetrate the secret world of FIFA. Until now. Andrew Jennings, the world's leading sports investigative reporter, has unearthed the stories that FIFA doesn't want told. He blows the whistle on an international cash-for-contracts scandal and reveals how some football officials have been urged to secretly repay the sweeteners they received. He asks why FIFA President delayed acting against troubled marketing company ISL, who wrongly withheld GBP 45 million of FIFA's cash. He exposes the vote-rigging that went on behind closed doors in the fight for control of FIFA. Jennings has researched in the Americas, Africa, Asia and Europe. He has uncovered damning evidence and persuaded FIFA insiders to talk to him about the questionable business practices they've witnessed. "Foul!'s" mix of world-class probing journalism, compelling storytelling and dark humour make this the most important book ever written about the men who control the people's game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every football fan should read this, 13 May 2006

If you've ever wondered why the average fan can hardly ever get tickets at World Cup games, read this and you'll find out why.
Jennings lays out detail after detail about how the money and tickets are systematically being redirected by Sepp Blatter and his team who run FIFA. No wonder they want to ban this book.
Lets hope the tradition of booing Blatter and co when they turn for matches continues throughout this year's World Cup.

Andrew Jennings is in a similar genre to David Yallop and having read his The Great Olympic Swindle highlighting the vote rigging and corruption behind Olympic Bids I thought I would try out his latest book. This was also subject to a recent Panaroma episode.

Rather bizarrely (not sure if this is by accident or design) the book covers the period from 1998 to the 2006 World Cup ie, almost a continuance of Yallop's How They Stole The Game although this time Sepp Blatter is the main protagonist. Additionally, this is largely a story of how voting is rigged and FIFA members are paid off/induced/persuaded and at times impersonated to get the right vote result.

Again, this is an excellently researched book which takes a slightly different tack to Yallop's although the underlying story is one of lies, bribes and corruption within FIFA.

Similar to How They Stole The Game this is another book FIFA tried to ban through the courts although this attempt was unsuccessful and as far as I am aware there nothing within the book has been disproved by FIFA since publication.

The world of football in this so called professional arena continues to amaze.
We the mere fanatics continue to support our beloved game. We continue to pay to walk through the turnstiles and watch our talented stars perform. For us it is the art of the game, the phenomena of competition and passion which is the catalyst of the Arenalin rush through the highs and lows of success and failure.
We religiously contribute without question to pay in various forms: the new football strip, the icons of merchandise that give us an identity and image.
We are pounced upon by the press and officials (Blatter, Havelande, Venables and the like) from within the football world when the odd idiot or group of thugs show no respect to us and our game by violence or racism....
This book is a welcome revelation of the investigations into the way the game is run by officials who are corrupt. It clearly highlights the perpetuation of corruption and political farce of the use of power. It shows how an endemic environment of corruption will manipulate the use of the vote. The abuse of finance is acutely described where the number of zeros becomes an insignificance to those within the game who do not respect or understand the mere aspirations of the average family man or woman.
I will tell you no more in the fear you may not then read the book - it is an excellent read, an ideal sequel to match "Bowers" "Broken Dreams" which illustrates the wonders of how the Bates, the Venables, the Graham's, the Redknapps continue unabashed to represent our game at the highest levels.
This will bring discussion and debate to the local pub or club.... Enjoy!
