"This inventive design object and invaluable reference provides an extraordinary view into the ideas that drive Foster"
Mondoarc, November 2008 --Mondoarc, November 2008

Product Description

In 2007, Norman Foster celebrates forty years of independent practice. Founded in 1967 as Foster Associates and now known as Foster + Partners, for over four decades his studio has grown to become one of the largest and most respected in the world. Since its inception, the practice has received more than four hundred awards and citations for excellence and has won more than seventy international and national competitions. The new book celebrates forty years of Foster's most important projects, together with forty themes that have consistently underpinned his work. Echoing the spirit of Foster's architecture, the book itself is designed around a pioneering format which allows the content to be accessed interactively. This inventive design object and invaluable reference provides an extraordinary view into the ideas that drive Foster's seemingly inexhaustible creative energy.

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Foster 40 (Hardcover)
This is a beautifully presented book, it's a dinky 7" approx square size. Within the outer casing there are two books which are joined back to back and enclosed between stainless steel covers. One book portays Foster's 40 best projects purely in plush photographs, the other book, which is much more interesting covers "40 Themes", for example "Domes", "Kit of Parts" or "Urban Rooms". The drawings here are a compilation of beautiful concept sketches, working drawings and photos to illustrate these themes. It feels to me like a very generous expose of Foster's thinking and approach and there is much to learn here.

It's a pity there isnt a paperback equivalent, this book would have great mass appeal and all the packaging and steel makes it a bit uncomfortable to read. I was lucky to get mine a bit cheap because it has a slight dent on the outer box. As a book on architecture, it seems it is aimed at a general audience with enough detail and drawings to please architects. It doesn't as I had hoped go into the level of detail you see in the Works series, which is understandable.

All in all I would recommend this book, but I hope you get lucky like me and get a cheap one, if I spent £70+ on it, as I see here. I'm afraid I'd be a bit disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nicely put together., 20 Mar 2010
By Joong Won Lee "Joongwon" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Foster 40 (Hardcover)
The contents are divided into two books: 40 Themes and 40 Projects.
"40 Themes" cover alphabetically recurrent architectural themes in the practice
of Foster & Partners. It goes on like this - Aerondynamics,, Canopies,, Double Skin,,, etc.
In each of the theme, sketches of Lord Foster, key drawings, and small b/w photos
are provided to illustrate how each of the theme was architecturally realized.

"40 Projects", on the other hand, has only color photographs of projects.
The images in this book correlate with the themes in the other book.
At each page of both books has a kind footnote where to look at for
reference on the other book. For instance, "Double Skin" in "40 Themes"
has a note to reference pg 33 & pg 251 in "40 Projects".

Compared to other monographs on Foster&Partners, the value of this book
lies in compiling projects thematically, thereby allowing readers to see
how each theme was applied on different projects over time. The creative
evolution of Foster&Partners practice is easily graspable.

Of the two books, "40 Themes" is more valuable for architects.
From big urban conceptual diagrams to small mullion detail drawings,
the book points out design issues with highest clarity.
As always, Lord Foster's long-thought-out, yet clear-simple sketches
shines the book.
