This review is from: Foster 40 (Hardcover)
The contents are divided into two books: 40 Themes and 40 Projects.
"40 Themes" cover alphabetically recurrent architectural themes in the practice
of Foster & Partners. It goes on like this - Aerondynamics,, Canopies,, Double Skin,,, etc.
In each of the theme, sketches of Lord Foster, key drawings, and small b/w photos
are provided to illustrate how each of the theme was architecturally realized.
"40 Projects", on the other hand, has only color photographs of projects.
The images in this book correlate with the themes in the other book.
At each page of both books has a kind footnote where to look at for
reference on the other book. For instance, "Double Skin" in "40 Themes"
has a note to reference pg 33 & pg 251 in "40 Projects".
Compared to other monographs on Foster&Partners, the value of this book
lies in compiling projects thematically, thereby allowing readers to see
how each theme was applied on different projects over time. The creative
evolution of Foster&Partners practice is easily graspable.
Of the two books, "40 Themes" is more valuable for architects.
From big urban conceptual diagrams to small mullion detail drawings,
the book points out design issues with highest clarity.
As always, Lord Foster's long-thought-out, yet clear-simple sketches
shines the book.
