This is a highly enjoyable serial killer novel set in winter time in Alonquin Bay , North Ontario, Canada. The landscape plays a significant role in the book as the icy, freezing backdrop to an equally cold and desolate series of child murders in the community.Detective John Cardinal is assigned the task of identifying the killer(s), but at the same time he is being investigated by his partner , Lise Delorme, as part of a police corruption probe. The story is slow to begin with , as various characters from local, State and Federal police forces are introduced , but once the first body is identified it really takes off . Blunt creates detailed , vivid characters and this is the key to the success of the novel as the plot (and two main sub plots) develop to an exciting finale. The killer(s) in the book are particularly nasty and Sadistic (with a capital S) and it is their characterisations which to me were the most impressive. Very well written and we can almost feel the pain of the captive teenager as he realises his fate and the elation of Detective Cardinal when he finally discovers the link between the various killings. Only criticism I would make would be that too long is spent at the start of the novel introducing the various characters from the different Canadian law agencies , who were never really developed as the book progressed. For example , I thought Jerry Commanda was going to be a player after the first few chapters , but he faded away as the chase heated up. However that is a minor quibble only and this book is well worth a read.
