This is Misty's third book set in the Five Hundred Kingdoms, where Reality (and Magic) is shaped by The Tradition (note the capitals!). I actually bought this book in a Don't-Read-Me e-book format, which should tell the discerning reader just how much I enjoy this series. And now I have ordered it in good, old-fashioned Dead Tree format.
In the books in this series, Lackey takes traditional fairy tales and turn them sideways and inside out. The Traditional end to an old tale is not necessarily what the protagonists want.
The "happily ever after" is something they _do_ want, but The Tradition is just as happy creating tragedies as happy endings.
And since this is a Lackey story - there _is_ a happy ending, but what it is, and how the protagonists maneuvre around The Tradition to get there - read the book! It is worth it.
