I first read Fortune is a Woman at my local library, and I found that not only was it a masterpiece which showed the history of San Francisco during the beinging of the last century, it also showed a struggle of power that still haunts the two sexes till today, the struggle for supremecy.

The two times that I read Fortune is a Woman I did not sleep as I was so curious to find out what happened next. This sounds odd but even after reading it twice I still find it suprising and emotional and I cannot wait to read it again.

Having read lots of Eliazbeth Adler books before I was looking forward to this one but was very disappointed. I'm afraid I can't agree with the other reviews at all. I found the story long and tedious, not really that moving at all. Compared to her other books it was poor, nowhere near her usual standard (The Rich Shall Inherit, Private Desires, Leonie all unputdownable). I give it 2 stars for actually finishing it and kept hoping it would improve but I'm sorry to say it didn't.

A Timeless re-read 17 July 2009
Format:Paperback
I have read this book three times over the past twenty years and I am about to order it again. I have passed the book on to several people over the years. It is by far the best book I have ever read. From page one to the end it is so compelling, the tears, emotions, anger, frustration and empathy felt for the subjects are far beyond any other book I have ever read. A timeless classic and I wonder why it has never been a box office hit.
