5.0 out of 5 stars From a Jack to an Ace 24 July 2012
By Richard
There's been a Benny Spellman CD on Collectables for a few years which at least came out in his lifetime.
Though the Ben E King lookalike had only one hit-which made No 80-Fortune Teller went on to a life of its own after the Stones had covered it on an EP.Apart from other versions through the years the song plus its B side Lipstick Traces would end up on every other New Orleans compilation.
Or did he? Benny Spellman was the deep voice on the Ernie K Doe hit Mother In Law-included here for completeness as the 3rd track but K Doe was nowhere near the singer Spellman was and his hit was bought by every other husband in the country who identified with it (Ernie K Doe's 2nd U K hit came after a TV advert)
Even the last track on here which is probably writer Allen Toussaint's sense of humour in naming one of his Stokes instrumentals Crystal Ball!! (geddit?)

4.0 out of 5 stars typical NO R&B from the 60s. 2 Nov 2012

But how bad can that be? I don't know about 'Northern Soul' gems-he's about as far South as you can get. ("Northern Soul" refers to R&B popular in the North of England, as this is a UK release.) Some of the cuts feature Spellman as a baritone backing vocalist, behind the likes of Ernie K- Doe. Features the great Allen Toussaint on piano and production, Dr. John (Mac Rebenack) on guitar, etc. Includes Shout Factory's usual great booklet, with small photos and 45 labels from US and UK. The best known tunes are "Mother In Law" (by Ernie K-Doe, nee Kadoe)and Benny's own "Lipstick Traces" and "'Taint It The Truth", as well as "A Certain Girl" (covered by the Yardbirds) and "Fortune Teller" (covered by the Stones and others). Sound is great on most tracks, apparently from master tapes, except the rarest singles. Spellman seldom recorded after the 1960s, but sang backing vocals on Paul McCartney's "My Carnival".Venus and MarsHe performed often at Jazzfest, and died at age 79, in 2011.
4.0 out of 5 stars NEW ORLEAN R&B AT ITS BEST 26 Feb 2013

Benny Spellman casts a spell with the Fortune teller and the distinct sound of New Orlean music is present in all the tracks with gret session musicians let in most cases by Allan Tousant,s piano playing. Its hard to understand why music like this never reached a wider audience.
