Review

"Full colour, action and comedy, this exciting story invites children to anticipate events and join in with repetitions." (Nicolette Jones, The Sunday Times Year's Best Children's Books)

"A fun and exciting good news/bad news book in its own right" (Keith Dudhnath The Bookbag)

"The perfect fusing of words and pictures will captivate and lead a young reader through this wonderful drama." (Carousel Magazine)

"A riveting and cleverly constructed tale. Foreman's distinctive illustrations invite the reader's exploration and tell as much or more of the story as do the words." (Jill Bennett Books for Keeps)

"A great story to share with children and then share again." (Armadillo Magazine)

4.0 out of 5 stars Fortunately I was lucky enough to be sent this! 11 Sep 2013
Format:Paperback
This is a story about a little boy, who heads off to grandma's house because she left her umbrella at their house. Along the way the boy meets many different characters and animals. Throughout the story fortunately and unfortunately are used as they boy comes across things in his path.

I read this to a class of 5 year old's and they loved the story, they were joining in with 'fortunately' and 'unfortunately' and really loved the illustrations. At some points I had to go back to the pictures for the children to view for longer!

The journey to grandma is a magical one, going through time zones (such as dinosaurs) and visiting space, traveling on a boat with pirates and even getting lost in a whale!

There was so much to discuss in this story and I felt it really helped the children with their imagination. At the end we discussed the book and the children spoke about their favourite parts, many of them loved the end with the surprise jewels!

I would like to thank the publisher for sending me this book - this has not effected my review in any way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fortunately, Unfortunately by Michael Foreman 13 July 2013
By anagi
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this book and three others by Michael Foreman for my 4 year old granddaughter. She had borrowed the book from the library and wanted her own copy. This is a funny, lovely book for small children. However, her two older sisters aged 9 and 10 also love the book. Michael Foreman writes thought provoking stories for children; they carry a message without labouring the point, almost incidental. I would recommend his books for children of all ages. Adults will love them too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great teaching aid. 28 Feb 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The book seems ideal to demonstrate how to correctly use the adverbs as sentence starters - I'll be using it with my Y5 class. Really good examples given and even though I'll be using it with 9/10 year olds, I'm sure they'll enjoy the situations in the story and will not think it's too young for them.
