Book Description

30 Nov 2009
Secrets and subterfuge abound in Regency Newmarket...Caroline Fortune asks for little more than to train horses and continue her stealthy progress towards independence. To this end she projects a cheerfully argumentative persona in the hope that the potential suitors dredged up by her mother will all leave her alone. Lord Alexander Rothwell is certainly happy to do so. He is in Newmarket purely to fulfil an obligation. Irritable because he believes he is investigating a mare's nest, he is determined to disprove rumours of crooked racecourse dealings as soon as possible. Then he can return to his political career in London. So, when Caroline finds Alexander left for dead outside her brother's racing stables, they are both considerably disconcerted.

A pattern is beginning to emerge when reading Jan Jones's excellent Newmarket Regencies. When I read 'Fair Deception' I fell for a secondary character, Caro Fortune, and spotted her as a potential heroine, so I was delighted to discover her starring in 'Fortunate Wager'. This time I think I've identified the heroine of the next book in the series, and am looking forward to finding out if I'm right!

The Regency market is awash with books from authors claiming to be the next Georgette Heyer - sadly, they never are! Jan Jones makes no such claim but her affection for the genre is apparent on every page and the warmth and charm of her stories is endearing. She also comes closer, to my mind, to the genuine Heyer than most others I have encountered; no mean feat.

Wit, pace, charm - are all present in this novel and the unusual racing background gives an added dimension to a book that doesn't disappoint. I read it in one sitting and heaved a sigh of satisfaction at the end. Lord Alexander is a proper hero and Caroline is a delight. I look forward to discovering if I'm correct in my guess as to the heroine of the next in this beguiling series!

5.0 out of 5 stars I read it in one sitting! 31 Mar 2011
Format:Hardcover
Set against the 19th century Newmarket horse racing environment "Fortunate Wager" is intriguing, charmingly written and as close to Georgette Heyer as you can get. The heroine, Caroline Fortune, is quirky and unconventional without being a shrew, and I found it refreshing that the hero, Alexander Rothwell, wasn't a rake, because personally I get a little tired of rakes in Regency romances. Although Rothwell has his secrets and personal issues to deal with, he's also a man of integrity.

The plot is quietly suspenseful and builds steadily towards a final dramatic crescendo, which resonates long after you've closed the book.
