Biography

Protest The Hero have carved an identity for themselves that is so revolutionary within heavy music that to call them “unique” would be like calling Louis C.K. “pretty funny” or the classic “Star Trek” television series “influential sci-fi.” The band effortlessly balances high-minded artistry with wit and whimsy, substantive viewpoints with ... Great album from a great band. Protest The Hero are a progressive metal band from Canada and this is easily their most impressive work to date.

My reasons to why this album is incredible:

- It takes a lot of influence from Sikth and King Crimson but is a step in the evolution of the band.
- Great lyrics with a concept flowing through the album.
- Crushing heavy sound with a great measure of shredtastic guitars and bass.
- At the same time as the above criteria, there are some soft piano interludes and soothing vocals along the way.
- Grest songwriting with optimum use of each instrument.
- Incredible vocals and presence from lead singer Rody Walker.

This is a great album. Protest made a concious decision to focus on more technically complex and original guitar work, and as such it can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming, but it certainly doesn't have time to get boring, considering there are so many different riffs per song. Perhaps it would have been nice to have a little more catchy song writing like that found it Kezia, but it's definately an important album for the progression of the band. Also, all the songs work amazingly live. If you have a chance, go see them live, it's amazing.

Fortress is the second full-length studio album by the unique Canadian band Protest The Hero. It was released in early 2008 and produced by Juice Butty (Alexisonfire, City & Colour, Kobra And The Lotus). It is generally regarded as the band’s heaviest album to date, and featured the breakthrough singles “Bloodmeat” “Sequoia Throne” and “Palms Read.”

Mixing a few dozen strains of Progressive Metal and Mathcore, with occasional Melodic Death Metal riffs, the band have developed their own instantly recognizable sound. The band dart rapidly between different ideas and styles and cover an astounding amount of ground in a single song, without ever sounding like they are just being wacky for the sake of it.

This album sees the band at their most savage, their most technical and their most esoteric. The lyrical content is less personal and focuses on the concept of Goddess Worship. The music is less poppy and the vocals feature a lot more growls and screams.

Highlights include the brilliant and varied “Bone Marrow” which starts off Eastern Tinged, has sort of symphonic flourishes low in the mix but bursts into a huge melodic chorus and almost Reggae sounding breakdown, as well as “Limb From Limb” which contains an interesting out of character Synth solo, and the the very catchy and memorable “Wretch.”

There are so many great little touches that every song is interesting to listen to over and over again to get to grips with all the different ideas.

An excellent record by a unique band; I ordered it on November 27th and was given an expected arrival date of December 3rd-16th but it actually arrived as early as November 29th! When I opened it, it unexpectedly proved to be coloured Vinyl (purple) as opposed to standard black which is even better!
Overall-I cannot fault anything from start to finish!

very disappointed with this purchase I was looking forward to it so much and although it plays well and sounds great it cuts off before the album is complete on both sides of the vinyl, maybe there is a reason behind this but I have played it on multiple record players and the same problem occurs

I've had this album for about 2 years and 10 months, and it's still just as great as when I first heard it. Possibly the best album I've ever heard. EVERYTHING about this album is excellent. Mind-blowing, progressive metal. Technical yet still focused on melody. Best lyrics I've ever heard/read. SAMPLE: 'If heaven rides against us then God himself must be damned'.

Opening song 'Bloodmeat' is, in my opinion, the greatest piece of music ever written.

Protest The Hero are the best and the most amazing band ever.
