3.0 out of 5 stars ...strange deaths or just plain strange??, 23 Mar 2004
Fortean Times is a monthly magazine of news, reviews and research on strange phenomena and experiences, curiosities, prodigies and portents. It was founded in 1973 to continue the work of Charles Fort, who was skeptical about scientific explanations, observing how scientists argued according to their own beliefs rather than the rules of evidence and that inconvenient data was ignored, suppressed, discredited or explained away. When I saw The Fortean Times Book of More Strange Deaths gracing the shelves in the 'New This Week' section of my local library, I was immediately intrigued by the title. My understanding was death is death. How could death be deemed strange? I decided to find out...

The book contains 375 stories of 'fanciful fatlaities' separated into 18 categories ranging from deaths at home - 'lawnmower deaths', marriage-related deaths - 'husbands killing wives for silly reasons', through to undignified deaths. People who read this book are likely to fall into three categories. There will be those who find this an entertaining and harmless collection of short anecdotes that can be perused through while drinking a cup of tea or watching TV; there will be those who will find this...errr... disturbing; and, there will be those who (like me) may feel both emotions.

I have to admit that some of the stories are funny: for instance the motorcyclist who loved bubble-gum so much - but his bubble literally popped when his goggles became blinded by the chewing gum and he skidded off the road to meet his end. If I read this as a Monty Python sketch I think I would be rolling around on the floor with laughter but knowing that it was true I felt both guilty and disturbed on reading it. The compilers ensure us form the beginning that some stories may be exaggerated and to their credit they do give a list of all the sources in the Reference at the end of the book.

My personal opinion is as a rule if you want a light piece of escapism or something to dip into occasionally (only real reason for ever buying this book) I would recommend any book on nature (esp. David Attenborough) for it does the job just as well if not better as opposed to something like this. However, there are worser ways of how to waste your life than reading this book... no doubt you will find out what some of them are if you do decide to read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good, not sparing any of the gory details,, 10 April 2000
By A Customer
I was given this book as a Christmas present. The cover had a whacky illustration on the front andI began reading straight away. I read it non stop for two hours, enthralled by the gory and curious deaths. There are a number of different chapters, each more interesting than the last. Some of the fatalities are too strange to believe but the tales are very convincing and most of them are very amusing. Overall, a very good book and as I said before, none of the gory details are spared.
