If you read the label on a box of chocolates you'll know exactly what you're gonna get. Life isn't like that in Forrest Gump, however, which is one of the reasons why this movie divided appreciative audiences from hard-hearted critics like few others before it. Audiences responded to the Frank Capra-style sentimentality of this warm-hearted tale of a good ol' American boy making his way in the world without ever losing his pure and simple innocence. Critics, however, were made uneasy by the apparently reactionary subtext to the parallel lives of Forrest and his girlfriend Jenny. Her fate, contrasted with his, suggests a triumph for plain ol' American values over dangerous freethinking hippies and liberals. Whether the movie is just unadulterated sentiment or right-wing propaganda, one thing at least was acknowledged by all: that Forrest Gump displays all the craftsmanship of one of Hollywood's most inventive directors and features a central performance from an actor renowned for his total commitment to every role. Thanks to Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks, even the most cynical critic will find it hard not to shed at least one tear by the end of this undeniably engrossing movie. The soundtrack is great, too.
On the DVD: another good two-disc set gives fans of Gump and budding filmmakers alike plenty to enjoy. The anamorphic picture and Dolby Surround on Disc 1 do full justice to Zemeckis' vision, which is accompanied by two commentaries: one from the director, producer Steve Starkey and production designer Rick Carter, and another one from producer Wendy Finerman. Disc 2 has the usual making of documentary (30 mins), plus some neat featurettes on the production and sound design and the many special effects shots (including how they made Gary Sinise lose his legs). In addition there are some screen tests of Robin Wright and a very young Haley Joel (The Sixth Sense) Osment, plus trailers and a photo gallery. All in all this is a worthwhile package. --Mark Walker --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The story of Forrest really puts life into perspective and in this overly, noisy complicated world; we can all take a leaf out of this amazing film. Hanks, who superbly plays Gump, leaves amazing clues on how to be successful in life, even for those of us who are fortunate enough to have an IQ above 75 - Learn to love everyone unconditionally, focus on what you are good at and focus on one aspect of success at a time, i.e. if you are good at running, give all your energy to running and becoming the best in that particular field.
Don't be a dork like me and neglect this film like I have for several years... no matter how down you are at this moment or even if life is treating you well, I believe that Gump will make you see life from a different angle all together. Peace, love and happiness for 2015.
so to speak.
Growing up he only had one true friend 'Jenny'(Robin Wright)young -
with the exception of that one friend he was regarded as different.
Little changed in this respect during adulthood.....but...this is Forest's
story as told to complete strangers who seemed to listen.
A stunning performance from 'Tom Hanks' star of many great movies such as
'The Green Mile'- 'Saving Private Ryan'- 'Castaway' and 'Big' to name just
a few of his on-screen achievements .
This film in which 'Tom Hanks' won an Oscar is simply 'a beautiful film'
About the film, well, after 20 years I still think it is a smart and magnificent example of what American cinema was able to produce until some decades ago: a multilayered and universal masterpiece where everyone can enjoy it according to his own point of view and approach, no matter if just as a emotional and unpredictable, bizarre and funny love story throughout the decades or a more subtle and complex trip through the contraddiction of America and its dream and values.
At the end of the day, you can think it's the statement of a liberal director who admits his own side defeat, or a conservative point of view about good old values always surviving to the storms of Histories. To me it is an existential yet genially direct and clear portray of the way life and world goes. Maybe Tom Hanks most stunning performance and a vivid example of Zemeckis' talent. A guy who can master and try every genre, hiding his vision behind a magical storytelling and always a step ahead of times when it comes to special fx and a wise, cinematic way to use them without ever showing off (see also his work on Contact, where the best fx are basically invisible).
Tom Hanks plays Forrest to perfection, being very fitting for the character. This film is genuinely funny as well as the story being told really well, with a bit of everything in it. It pulls on your heart strings in a variety of ways. Gump himself made an impact on lots of people, he is inspiring and shows how people with slight disadvantages can always find a place in our hearts.
A really good film, I recommend it to anyone who wants a good laugh and a moving story.
Had this on VHS so thought id buy it on DVD.
The storyline touches you on every level - at times its weepy, others your sitting on the edge of your seat willing him to get away.
the ups and downs of Forrest Gump will have you entralled at the twist and turn as his life unfolds.
A good flim for those sunday afternoons or when your not doing anything.
