Finally, after many years in the wilderness (making movie soundtracks and the odd remix, plus a house album) Rupert Parkes returns to what he does best. Truth be told, this is actually more of a compilation, but it flows nicely in the same way as the first 'Form & Function' did. And as with Vol 1 it's full of dark and nasty dancefloor-filling steppers, although it takes a small detour at the start: opener 'Industry Of Noise' is a rock crossover with Mr Parkes playing guitar and singing and 'Love & War' is a soulful female vocal d&b anthem. The third track picks up the intensity and features Robert Owens on vocals. Track 4 is Teebee's remix of the 1997 single 'Ni Ten Ichi Ryu' and from here on in it's all pretty dark and intense. The Hochi remix of 'Sidewinder' features an awesome slow-down-then-speed-back-up section and a bassline sinister enough to give small children nightmares, while 'One Nation' may feature the best Amens ever heard. 'Saturated Hip-Hop' is classic eastern-flavoured Photek. The Die & Clipz (mispelt on the back sleeve for some reason) remix of 'Thunder' is stunning and slightly reminiscent of recent Hospital Records releases. 'Full Spectrum Dominance' features the best use of speech samples I've heard in a long time. On the whole, I love this record as it encompasses what is best about old-school d&b with some bang-up-to-date flourishes and I think every d&b DJ should consider this an essential purchase.
