JOHN MAEDA
The nature of form in the digital age is trapped in the invisible realm of code. Form+Code makes that world visible to the community that stands to gain the most from it: artists and designers.

Product Description

The last decade has witnessed a proliferation of artists whose primary medium is software. Algorithmic processes, harnessed through the medium of computer code, allow artists to generate increasingly complex visual forms that they otherwise might not have been able to imagine, let alone delineate. The newest volume in our Design Brief series Form+Code in Design, Art, and Architecture is a non-technical introduction to the history, theory, and practice of software in the arts. Organized into themes linked to aspects of code--repetition, transformation, parameters, visualization, and simulation--each of the book's sections contains an essay, code samples, and numerous illustrations. An accompanying website (www.formandcode.com) features code samples in various programming languages for the examples in the book. An ideal introductory text for digital design and media arts courses, this unique primer will also appeal to students and professionals looking for a survey of this exciting new area of artistic production.

A great combination 4 Dec 2010
By qwertkey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Form + Code is a wonderful glimpse of how computation can be applied as art. The book does not delve into anything too deep so don't be expect pages of technical know how. This book shouldn't be skipped over by those who already know the technical concepts in this book as it is a really great example of simple computation being applied in interesting, engaging, and creative fashions. The designers from LUST and Reas make a great combination as not only is the content of the book interesting, but the design of the book is a treat to look at.

The source code also given in this book is wonderful for beginners to start understanding how actual code can be applied.

Full of Inspiration 5 Jan 2012
By Tyler Paige - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Absolutely great book, full of inspiring examples and explanations. The briefs are long enough to captivate interest, but short enough to not bore the reader with unnecessary information. There's even quite a bit of modern art history within the book, which was great to see. On top of it all, there are sample codes available for download online, making this book an excellent buy.
