Review

'Mesmerizing...pulses with dark undercurrents of familial love and betrayal, sisterly mysteries and rites, louche neighbours and secretive houseguests.' Elle 'Lush, languid...Troyan weaves loving, sensual descriptions of place and characters and a muted sense of foreboding.' Publishers Weekly Praise for Angels in the Morning: 'A work of real grace and beauty.'- James Lasdun 'Psychologically acute and thoroughly suspenseful.' - Margot Livesey --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Product Description

Helen has turned eleven and her sunshine, young girl's world is beginning to darken around the edges. It is summer and she is in Bella Terra, a beautiful island off the Italian coast where her family spend an idyllic few months in their villa each year. This time, though, everything is different. Her parents' marriage is simmering with deep-rooted, unfathomable, tension. Lea, her precocious thirteen-year-old sister, is heading off for unknown - adult - shores leaving Helen forlornly behind. The Ashtons arrive in the midst of this. Prue, a school friend of Helen's mother, is glamorous and alluringly worldly; her husband, a mysterious, eerie figure. As the sultry Mediterranean shimmers and steams, each one plays out their own secret drama. It will be a hot, blue summer, a summer of love affairs, heart break and loss of innocence. And it will ultimately lead to Lea's disappearance ...Uncoiling with foreboding and inevitability, The Forgotten Island builds up to the haunting moment when a young girl's life is changed forever. Evocative, nuanced, sensual, this is mesmerizing storytelling. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

A bit disappointed. 16 Feb 2011
Format:Hardcover
The Forgotten Island is well written, but it is a pity that the author did not have more to say. Tension and inevitability is all very well, but what makes a book worth reading for me is a surprise, or even better, new insights. I missed that. AW.

Haunting read 18 Jan 2008
Format:Hardcover
Tense from the start, it is the sense of foreboding and inevitability that drives this book to its haunting climax.
Quite simply story-telling at its best!

Beautifully Done Italian Island Vacation Story.. 4 Jun 2006
By S. Henkels - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
In the 1970's, two sisters, aged 10 and thirteen, take a vacation in a coastal Italian island with their parents. After several days of orientation around the island and its beaches and scenery, a married friend of the family visits them. Some odd friendships develop, and even stranger things happen, in this short but excellent story told from the viewpoint of the younger sister. Wonderful descriptions, finely toned relationships, and a grand finale make this fine way to spend your time this summer, especially reading the beach!..But this is much superior to your standard "Beach Reading" fare!
