Polly Longden’s china-doll looks belie a strong and fiery personality. When typhoid strikes her home city of Lincoln, she needs every ounce of that strength in order to cope. With the death of her mother, thirteen-year-old Polly has to give up her ambition of becoming a teacher to care for her family. When their father, too, falls victim to the typhoid, his only hope is to go to hospital, leaving Polly to cope alone. Thankfully she has the support of her neighbours: Bertha Halliday and her son, Leo, a young policeman.

Through all the hardships that follow, Polly is sustained by her dream of becoming Leo’s wife. But her father’s hot temper leads him to the wrong side of the law during the railway riots of 1911, forcing Leo to take drastic action that Polly will surely never be able to forgive and forget . . .

About the Author

Born in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, Margaret Dickinson moved to the coast at the age of seven and so began her love for the sea and the Lincolnshire landscape.

Her ambition to be a writer began early and she had her first novel published at the age of twenty-five. This was followed by a number of further titles including Plough the Furrow, Sow the Seed and Reap the Harvest, which make up her Lincolnshire Fleethaven trilogy. Many of her novels are set in the heart of her home county but in Tangled Threads and Twisted Strands, the stories include not only Lincolnshire but also the framework knitting and lace industries of Nottingham.

2.0 out of 5 stars A bit boring :( 21 April 2011
Format:Paperback
I couldn't 'get into' this book, even though the cover and the summary were interesting. I'm really into history and period stories at the moment, but this one was very disappointing. Nothing really happened and it was very plain about every day life for a young girl having to look after her brothers and sisters when the mother died. I've only read about a quarter of it and to be honest I haven't wanted to pick it up and finish it. It is very boring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forgive and Forget 31 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
Thank you Margaret for yet another excellent book. It was great to visualise being in the city of Lincoln again, desriptions as usual made me feel I was actually there and especially the visit to the Cathedral, with mention of the Imp. So much tragedy for families in the time of the Typhoid epidemic, the War and the Spanish Flu and how courageous the main character Polly was to carry on through whatever life through at her. Wont tell you more, readers as dont want to spoil it for you. Definitely a page turner not to be missed.

3.0 out of 5 stars not as good as expected 9 April 2011
Format:Paperback
I have read all this authors books so far and enjoyed them so i was really looking forward to this one. Although not a bad read it is not up to her usual standard of story telling but it is forgivable given her list of fabulous reads. Don't let this put you off, you will enjoy this book but for me i was looking for a little more.
