5.0 out of 5 stars Keeping it simple. 6 April 2001
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Simple,Imaginative, creative, inspiring, this book written by one of the leading graphic designers although slightly dated in look, still never fails to get you thinking.

Even in todays media crammed world it displays a way of thinking which can be applied to every aspect of design. By solving the problem creatively cuts out all confusion and engages the reader more than ever.

It may be simple in concept but not in the way it was created. If a piece of graphic design can evoke a smile or a reaction then surely the job is done and the piece is likely to be remembered.

A must read for anybody whether your in design or not, this book just explains how to think about problems and solve them creatively, if it makes you think at least once whilst reading then it has worked and if it doesn't then read it again. A great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shake up your brain! 2 April 2012
By EDP - Published on Amazon.com

My first job in New York was working for a truly great graphic designer, at one of the major book clubs. One month the cover of the News was a dual selection: Gorky Park and a Sam Francis novel. My boss had his photographer shoot a big Russian fur hat and a jockey's cap. Minimal type: the hats said it all. That's when the lightbulb went off in my head: THIS is what it's all about!

And this is what Bob Gill's book is all about.

It's about rethinking every job you get until you find the real problem. The one you have to solve to nail it.
It should come as no surprise that the real problem is not always (hardly ever?) the one your client thinks it is!
This is not a book that tells you what to do: you can't teach people how to have brilliant ideas, but you can point them in some interesting directions.

It's a book worth keeping around.
